That Friday train is a great opportunity to do some market research into whether passengers who had a free choice between two trains on adjacent platforms (and leaving one after the other) would choose speed or comfort.
My guess is the TOC would rather not know the answer

The TOC does know the answer from the passenger loadings, and the answer would suprise some on this forum.

Rail enthusiasts such as ourselves are not the average paying customer.

I'm almost certain most if not all non-enthusiasts would take the faster, safer, wi-fi enabled Pendolino.

Unfortunatly with me being tall I find that the pendolino's are horrible and its all because they have those stupid over head reservation screens if they had stuck with paper in seats ( which they revert to when there broke -_- ) then there would be more head room and also as we live in a beautiful country, so you have to have a window and these things just do not have a window saet and a table so for me the best way of travavilng is in comfort and a MK.3 set.

Agree with you, much prefer the reservation tickets, i'm forever sitting in a seat (thinking no ticket, no reservation) and being asked to move for sitting in somebody elses seat several minutes later, then noticing the reserved sign.

Ohh a very big waste of space indeed I can remember once me and 2 friends got on a pendolino and we found a table lined up with a window for once we sat down there was still 20 mins till departure from manchester picc and thought right no ticket reservations on the seats and the with 5 mins to departure a family of four turned up and were abit annoyed to find me and couple of lads just sat in there seats and all of a sudden from kind chat with mates this woman just came up to us and started to what's the way of putting this ermmm throwing her toys out of the pram and shouting at me I couldn't get a word in hedge ways and once she stop I just stoud up and said sorry I didn't realise these were reserved seats we forgot to check the. Screen and allowed her and her family to sit down, they were quite embarassed by this time and so they should have been, but by this time the train had filled up dramatically so we did find a seat but not well lined up with a window but it would have to do as we were only going as far as crewe which was good as we were changing to a desiro to see all of basford hall and LNWR but still a pain as I like to see jodrell bank

Hang on a minute why should she have felt embarrassed? You shouldn't have been sat there in the first place! Clearly she was a lot more observant than you and your mates. It’s not her fault that you didn’t have a particularly good view of Jodrell Bank.

Because a group of '16 year olds' who she had just had a very big go at had just stood up and apologized for there mistake and moved away with no fuss so that's why she should have been emarased by the fact that she was expecting trouble and I could have played the chav that she was expecting but guess what there are some 16 year old's who if asked nicely will just move anyway. I know there's not many but I am one of the good ones abit like the pretendolino

On my last journey from Crewe to London there were no reservations displayed and I had to move twice because people came along with reservations for my seat, in the end I had to stand as the train was full, and yes people can be very rude about it even when you point out that no reservation is displayed.

I wasn't advocating a return to paper reservations, just noting that even if you do check the reservation displays you can still be ejected from your seat, and this can happen multiple times during a journey which can be somewhat annoying.

Indeed. Best to sit in Coach E (totally unreservable)on a Pendo, or towards the end of Coach A. It's not a perfect solution though.

Hauled sets used to arrive at xx55 for an xx15 departure roughly and everyone managed. Plenty other TOCs are able to come round and put in the return working reservation labels on the inward journey.

Perfecly correct as on arriving into leeds aout 10 mins before arrival on the terminating east coast service they come round remove all old reservation tickets and insert new ones so that the train once opened for public can take up unresevrd seats

They managed it in the olden days though didnt they

If you'd vacated your seats as soon as you realised they were reserved by someone else the lady would not have become so exasperated. By continuing to sit there you only made the situation worse. When sitting in someone else's seat there is no requirement to be asked "nicely" before you vacate your seat.

More recently whenever I have travelled on trains where the electronic reservation system is not working there have been announcements stating that because of this reservations are unavailable for this service.

In the past this situation could arise with paper tickets as well due to lack of stock or printer failures so not a new thing either.

How do you know all this, were you there? As soon as they realised their error they should have just moved rather than just remaining in someone else's seats. "Yet she still got an apology"; talk about the arrogance of youth!

We (jungle james was not there) didnt realise are error and thats because when you sit down on a pendolino you cant see the reservation screens so we sat down and never checked due to us forgetting about them. And there is a better way to go about getting an apology. And he knows this because he read my earlier post.

This is remarkably petty. If you're in someone's reserved seat, regardless of whether you're there by accident or otherwise, the correct response to someone asking to sit in the seats they reserved is as follows:

"Oh, is this your seat? I'm sorry, I'll move".

Correct that is the response you you use and I did use that but anyway this is becoming petty as you say so we will end it and get back to what this thread was made for the Pretendolino.

As for the Pendo vs MK3 argument, the 'Pretendolino' set is a bit tired and grubby. However it would be interesting to see what passengers would say if you put a WSMR MK3 next to a Pendolino and asked them to compare.

Did this woman ever mention she thought you were chavs? I don't see how you could know this...? Or are you going on the presumption that ALL adults see teenagers as chavs?

This is the information made available by Andy S who as I understand it knows most if not all of the WB64 crew and was posted on another forum.

The guys who worked 1K39 this evening were all Mark 3 and Class 90 men, control instructed the driver who was due to bring the empties into Euston from Wembley this evening not to do so, so he didn't. They thought the farce from this morning would carry on, so they weren't gonna bother using the Mk3 set, as a result the job's a mess at Euston with Pendolinos being stepped up to cover. Virgin Trains regrets.

there isn't a loco available to Virgin, a health and safety set of bollocks prevents 90042 going onto WB64, they're trying to find a DBS driver to perform shunt.

**Further info** Virgin didn't collect the loco last night so Freightliner brought it down and left it in a Siding Virgin Trains don't sign.
