There is no direct line between Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western railway stations. A reversal would most certainly be required after leaving Wigan Wallgate station, running up the running line towards Springs Branch junction, then a reversal there along the running line back to Wigan North Western station.

However I am intrigued as the service that you so describe above in your quote and ask from what station it started from and what station it concluded its journey at.

That's because I meant from Ince to Wigan North Western, not Wigan Wallgate to Wigan North Western... :oops:

I see now how the confusion occurred as at that time, we were in the middle of a hiatus caused by an abbreviation of the spelling of Wigan Wallgate station (now deemed to be against the newly-updated quiz rules) and the next named posting of Wigan North Western station.
