Just saw this tour operated by UK Railtours, which is a mini tour from York - Rylstone Quarry near Skipton on the 23rd October. Just wondering if anyone knows when the last time a tour was on this branch line?
Looks good! I'm a local lad but Skipton > Cracoe is a serious red bit that needs ticking off. I've driven past the Tarmac terminal lots of times, and when there's a shed parked up there it looks almost surreally out of place!
What's the planned traction? Photo of last time shows a shed, but (as usual) UK Railtours' website is sketchy on the details.
Top and Tail 67 apparently. From York it is £22.50, not sure if they are picking up in Skipton but sure you could get over to York for it! Looks like I have one weekend in October planned now!
I'd go to York for it. I can take one of my kids over to see their grandparents for the day and cash in on the Family Railcard saving![]()
Is that all you do? Try and constantly find ways to beat the system?![]()

Anyway, £22.50 is a lot for a mini tour of only 60+ miles each way, non? A very decent red bit, but pretty dodgy traction. From having had no skips at all before 8th August, I'll have cleared them in no time.
Is the photo call at Skipton on the return journey? If so, I could bail there rather than go all the way back to York. OTOH that'd put the cost/mile right up (although I'm not that interested in maximising skip mileage TBH), and a single Saltaire > York + single Skipton > Saltaire would probably be no cheaper than a Day Return Saltaire > York.

Looking at it this way, a return from York - Skipton is £11.15 with a railcard, so it is doube that for different stock and a branch I've never done. Time to book methinks.
Going back to my original question, when was the last time a charter ran up the branch if anyone knows? I haven't been doing railtours for too long but somone has said they've been on four before so I'm guessing it is not a rare event?
1st time on a pair of 156's on some special event at skipton station in 96, then 2nd & 3rd times with top & tail Class 56's in Dec 2000 and Nov 2003. Dont know if anything been up since, but would be surprised if there hasnt.

The fact is you are paying a premium for rare track. But in the end that's what it is. Its whether the mark of the red pen on this section is worth £22.50 - In my case yes and it will help in my frantic bid to get 9000+ miles this year![]()
