I have seen a general improvement on Monday - Friday but we must remember that on great northern this is based on less trains that pre-May so nothing to celebrate.
...
Handling of disruption is still poor. Both in terms of communication and recovery. They skip stop leaving big gaps but the train doing so are not routed onto the fast lines so don’t really recover time.
Pretty much what happened this afternoon.
13:55 Horsham to Peterborough was fine until it got to Finsbury Park where the changeover driver was nowhere to be found and as a result 30 minutes later it sets off skipping everything north of Stevenage. Great it makes up 10 minutes.
Meanwhile the passengers thrown off at Finsbury Park have to change onto the delayed 15:52 which was stuck in the tunnels in the traffic jam caused by the missing driver. So that train now loses time all the way and by Hitchin everyone is an hour late - all to save 10 minutes on the turnaround.
The missing driver also knocks on to the 14.09 Brighton to Cambridge so it ends up 30 minutes late (although no skipping stations for them), and the 15:20 Kings Cross to Cambridge which ends up 20 minutes late by Hitchin, so then skips everything else.
And what was hilarious about this shambles of not being able to get a driver to where they need to be, was the change over driver for the delayed 15:52 was stood on the platform at Finsbury Park commenting to the platform staff they were surprised they had not been asked to take the train with the missing driver instead.
I am not sure which is worse, the lack of organisation of getting a member of staff to a location on time (and not realising you have a replacement there already) or the people playing toy train sets by skip stopping.
And the absolute icing on the cake was the delay south of Stevenage as according to the tannoy announcement, a driver who had left their train at the platform had gone missing. A wit on Twitter asked whether they would make the same announcement you would get at a supermarket - "Would the driver who has parked their train at platform x and is blocking the entrance please move it now".
