I can't see a real problem with the 700s but the screens will hopefully go on to show more useful information.. I am still seeing that the TfL updates can be hours out of date, which is of little use when it will either not show disruption, or show disruption that has cleared.

Either way, totally useless.

Since someone mentioned this a few days ago, I've been looking out for this. Every 700 I've been on since has had TfL updates no more than 10 minutes old. To be fair, every display has been working properly. Will still keep a look out.

This issue of crowding is one which is of importance for a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the afternoon.

For the other 20 hours of the day I suspect that many passengers might quite like a bit more legroom and all the other creature comforts itdoesntmatter mentioned. ...

The issue of crowding i.e. the commuter traffic in the peak hours is the reason for the design as is. If subsidised rail travel is the green way to get large numbers of commuters into our cities, (and especially true for the Thameslink routes) where the infrastructure imposes an absolute limit to the frequencies and sizes of trains, then after safety, capacity is the only real design criteria that must be met. There has been repeated discussions on this forum about "creature comforts" which as that term infers are not essential, and as previously confirmed, have been assessed on class 700s as potentially engendering passenger habits that would extend dwell times. To include such facilities would reduce line maximum capacity resulting in the worst case, passengers being left standing on platforms, - something that happened on normal peak days before the Thameslink Programme started. To risk a repeat of that because additional 'creature comforts' were included for those passengers who were lucky enough to get seats when over £6BN had been spent on improving capacity would be inexcusable.
As far as off-peak passenger amenity is concerned, users like me who don't travel in the peak and have to pay normal walk-up fares which are higher than many elsewhere in the UK, just have to put up with it because there is no alternative given the priority that commuter travel is given. This is generally true for most of the busy suburban routes into London.

In practice it's more than peak hour though. There can be busy train for the first off peak services, weekend events like football matches and major concerts, and late evenings after shows/pubs in London. The wider doors and bits near the doors are good for all those with suitcases too given the line has two airports (and there were a lot of suitcases today as lots of schools finished yesterday).

In other news, there have been an awful lot of train faults in the last couple of weeks leading to an apparent resurgence of 377s, shorter stock and cancellations. To take an example the southbound 8:23 from Leagrave was cancelled three out of five days this week.

Possibly full with many slim people? These indicators work on load not occupied space.

Possible, but as every other coach was showing red I think it might have been a little unlikely ;)

Think it's more a case now of which services aren't 700-operated.

Not all of them are out of date but I always check (sad I know, but it's something to do!).

How are the 700s connected? I assume there's a 4G connection, but is it backed up with a Wi-Fi connection at Wi-Fi enabled stations? It could be isolated to specific units that have connectivity issues.

Next time I see one, I'll make a note of what train it is.

Thanks for the time and effort!! :D

Unfortunately, my service (1W41 I think) doesn't appear to be operated by the 700s,which means I'll have to stick to a 377. :(

Oh well.

Oh well.

You could just adjust your journey by +/-15 minutes and it will most likely be a 700 - it's unlikely that there would be two consecutive 377s.

A 377 is probably more comfortable though.

That is right. Is it possible that you could have two or three consecutive 377s but very unlikely and the services 15 minutes before and after 1W41 are both 700s as far as I am aware. Unless they are put onto other routes it appears that there won't be that many 377s in service next week. After studying the very informative post by 'Class 466' it appears that a number of services which 377s had run for weeks such as 1W25 and 2W31 will now be 700s.

In my opinion 377s are more comfortable particularly in the front and rear coaches where seating is 2x2 with tables.

Yes those coaches on 377s are as good as it gets

A further increase in 700 diagrams this weekend sees 377509-512 leave ThamesLink.

Are 377509-512 simply going off-lease for now, or are they bring transferred over to Southeastern to join 501-508? They could really use them.

On another point, I was on on of the SE BFR to RTR evening peak services this week, and when I stepped off at Bromley, I noticed a TL driver operating the 465+466 with an SE DM in the fold-down seat. And we had a guard too at the back of the train - probably a rarity for TL drivers. I'm guessing this is a part of driver training for Gillingham Depot.

As you recognised them as an SE DM do you know who it was or which depot the DM was from ?

Not sure but TL Trainees on SE side wear SE uniform. There are a few out currently with SE DI's

As it was a TL Driver then maybe one of their DI's are being seconded to Gill Depot ? This could have been a traction assessment ride.

Tl related but briefly off topic. .

Are 3 and 4 platforms at black friars not worthy of new screens ?

come on, surely somebody knows

I believe there are still storage issues on SE side....im not sure there is much room at southern depot to keep them, or keep moving them from Selhurst for maintenance as 377501-508 do now.

Questions after the Gibb report still remain regarding whether the 313s will go off lease early to be replaced by 377s.

I couldn't say specifically - I can spot uniform from a glance, but whether the chap was a DI or DM, I couldn't be completely certain. He looked the part, though.

SE DM's don't wear uniform. So a non uniform guy with a TL Driver/Trainee sounds like a DM. Why, I'm not sure. I'll stick with my original guess and I'll ask about.

I was at Blackfriars Saturday and agree with what was said a few posts back, but also the mens toilets on the St Pauls side are a disgrace. 30p to enter and only two cubicles, one of which was out of order and the other of which had a cone in it and a blocked toilet.

Maybe me but I think it's pretty wrong to charge 30p in those situations?

I was on a couple of 700s, lovely trains mechanically, nice bright and airy, fast doors, good PIS (worked flawlessly for me!) and the acceleration is so smooth and the train moves so damn well, it's a shame that the DFT however specified no arm-rests and the standard airline seats are so close together, it ruins what could be a good train.

I actually think the Desiro City is an excellent product, unfortunately the spec that was ordered by the DFT, whilst you could see what they were trying to do, went too far towards cramming so many people in as they could.

The Gibb report states SE could easily accommodate the four 377/5s but the DfT havn't signed it off. To accommodate all 20 377/5s would cost £2 million. Only obstacle again is the DfT

Annoyingly these points were raised when the mock up was displayed so there was plenty of time for the spec to be altered.

It's another illustration for me of why the DFT should not be as involved in train projects as they are these days, look at the two projects that they handled, both many many years late, poor value for money and poorly executed and unfit for purpose.

But as usual they will privatise the blame and nationalise any praise that results from it.

yeh, well i dont think there is a single person/department/office that even considers passenger comfort and experience or even train ambience. Has anyone high up in the DfT sat on the 700 seat by the window for 2 hours, or the 387 seats for 90 mins?

Couple of questions whilst riding a few of these today.
1. I've noticed they're tending to put FLU on the Bridges and RLU on the Brightons now, was this originally the intention and they only did it the other way round before they had enough RLU?
2. AC sockets tripped - can they be reset from cab, or does it require coming into the particular carriage? Just wondered.

The way the diagrams work is a unit will go Bedford-brighton-Bedford-three bridges- Bedford and around again. So units come from one to the other.
They can not be reset from the cab or by the driver.
