I've never been sure what they do on weekends - the TfW information doesn't seem to suggest anything different to weekdays, but then it also claims that there is zero catering in standard class so I don't trust it very much.
In an ideal world the catering would be identical to weekdays on weekends, including Sundays would be nice. It's very inconsistent whether you'll have a chef onboard for Saturdays and it's currently not possible on Sundays. Speaking on Sundays, if a chef service was introduced on a Sunday, 1W56 wouldn't have a chef until Newport and 1V18 would lose the chef at Newport too, it's not great.

Had an amusing experience yesterday - after planning my travel based on what should have been Mk4s, and checking on RealTimeTrains that it actually was, when I turned up at the station the screens were warning of a 3 car train with no first class and reduced catering. Though the train diagram showed 5 coaches.

Fortunately RTT was right and they were wrong which was a nice surprise after the less welcome one.

How is the catering done at the moment? The buffet counter was closed but people were being served from a trolley next to it. It looked as if people in first class were being served something from the kitchen though.

There is a bit of a shortage of Mk4 catering staff at the moment, especially at the north end so if a train can’t be covered by a Manchester or Newport host then they attempt to source a trolley host from Shrewsbury to work the train when possible.

Thanks.

That's far more useful than anything I've been able to find out officially.

Personally I'd find it more useful on the train yesterday if instead of just announcing that there were only light snacks available they'd said that there should have been full catering but that they weren't able to offer it.

I don't really care if they apologise of not - I just find it useful to know what the situation is.

OK so they've avoided having to give a negative impression but it makes me think that they don't ever do full catering on that train - and that I can't trust the information on their journey planner.

A chef on the Sunday service would be nice. Especially at the 0930 from Manchester-Swansea is the only time the catering staff go all the way to Swansea and then on the 1455 from Swansea too.

I think its poor Swansea dont even get 1 return working now on weekdays, just the morning service to Manchester. And over a year after the evening working was withdrawn there is no sign of it returning. Its even in the long term timetable still. I just a random search for 11th May and its showing as 1630 Manchester to Swansea on RTT. They either need to withdraw it permanently or reinstate it to Swansea.

Its a very poor service for Swansea passengers, its a good job I like the 197s!

I keep managing to purchase mid-week First advances through to Swansea for 1V50. Find it frustrating how even when it’s a unit, they don’t reinstate CDF-SWA portion. Wish they’d reinstate or scrap it like you say, just for some added certainty with travel plans.

Looks like it won’t run through for a long while yet - cut back to Cardiff all the way into July now.

Not a good morning for the 67s+Mk4s... 67020+HD04 failed on prep this morning, and 67013+HD02 failed at Piccadilly on 1V37 – 1Z99 currently en route passing Ardwick. 197121 now covering the rest of 67013+HD02's diagram. 1W96 this evening will be 197 vice no doubt!

I ended up on 1v33 this morning. Delayed by another train apparently. There seemed to be more students for Hereford College than when I used to take that train before Covid. Had my 4 table to myself nonetheless.

Seems I have been lucky this week with my Mk4 journeys.

It was a fault on the loco and itll be swapped off tonight ready for the morning.

67020 also dud and its planned for 67016 to head to Holyhead later to get the set back to Crewe tomorrow.

Very rare these days to have issues like this so having to have 2 rescue locos out isnt great!

Flipping heck... yeah that isn't great! Presumably 010 will go on HD02 tonight and kick out on one of the diagrams off Crewe tomorrow?

Yes thats right. With HD01 on exam, 03 on repair now and 04 on its move to Crewe it does mean the start with the first Cardiff departure will be a 197 as only 4 available sets.

Cheers, thought that. At least that doesn't affect my plans for tomorrow massively. :)

Will 016 get its chance to see the light of day and go on HD04 when it gets back or am I asking for too much?

Great... 1V33 etc 197120! Any chance a Mk4 will carry on 1W61 from Crewe? Or will both Canton finishes tonight be 197 vice, unless a 197 works 1W96 or 1W65 vice Mk4?
