So many times this has failed to get off the ground, they are finally spending some money on it but doubt it will ever happen.

7 stations, mostly following the route of the TF1 highway: Santa Cruz (the capital) - Anaza, Candelaria, San Isidro, TFS Airport, Los Cristianos and Las Americas.

The Tren del Sur is a project managed by the Council of Tenerife , specifically by the company owned by the Metropolitan Council o Tenerife , through which the island of Tenerife will be provided with a train that runs along the northeast coast, until reachingf the south . It will start at the Transport Interchange of Santa Cruz de Tenerife , and its last stop will be in Adeje . It will be operated by Metropolitano de Tenerife , a company that also operates with the Tenerife Tramway . The works were expected to begin in 2010, and to be inaugurated in 2017 . However, at the end of 2011 the project was halted for economic reasons, but it was resumed at the end of 2017 where the projects have already begun to be drafted; and in 2019 it is planned to begin expropriations of the plots affected by the project.

To back this up, local newspaper El Dia has done a few reports on the matter recently. People are quite astounded it's going ahead, however some cynics mention it's nearly election time.

A potential northern extension is mentioned, following the TF5 highway from Santa Cruz up the hill to La Laguna, TFN Airport, then down into La Orotava / Puerto Cruz and Los Realejos - with a further potential extension to Icod de los Vinos.

Not exactly hot news (some 18 months' old actually):

The 80km standard-gauge electrified line will link Santa Cruz Transport Interchange with Adeje, the fourth-largest town in Tenerife, with five intermediate stations. In 2010 the total cost of the project was estimated to be around €1.8bn.

The first feasibility studies into the project were carried out in 1997.

So this has been dragging on for over twenty years now.....

Tis news in that the council just last week approved the start of initial works, but as I mentioned, I share your scepticism.

Seems... ambitious? Which is good, obviously, but a 220km/h service is quite a thing.

And especially given how long it took to finish off TF1 to its current end point- the road was basically abandoned part finished for years, used as a playground by cyclists!
