A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100.
His cost of production is 4/5 of the price.
What is his profit?

2. Teaching Maths In 1980
A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100.
His cost of production is 80% of the price.
What is his profit?

3. Teaching Maths In 1990
A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100.
His cost of production is £80.
How much was his profit?

4. Teaching Maths In 2000
A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100.
His cost of production is £80 and his profit is £20.
Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Maths In 2005
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habit of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. Your assignment: Discuss how the birds and
squirrels might feel as the logger cuts down their homes just for a measly
profit of £20.

6. Teaching Maths In 2009
A logger is arrested for trying to cut down a tree in case it may be
offensive to Muslims or other religious groups not consulted in the felling
licence. He is also fined a £100 as his chainsaw is in breach of Health and
Safety legislation as it is deemed too dangerous and could cut something. He
has used the chainsaw for over 20 years without incident however he does
not have the correct certificate of competence and is therefore considered
to be a recidivist and habitual criminal. His DNA is sampled and his
details circulated throughout all government agencies. He protests and is
taken to court and fined another £100 because he is such an easy target.
When he is released he returns to find Gypsies have cut down half his wood
to build a camp on his land. He tries to throw them off but is arrested,
prosecuted for harassing an ethnic minority, imprisoned and fined a further
£100. While he is in jail the Gypsies cut down the rest of his wood and
sell it on the black market for £100 cash. They also have a leaving BBQ of
squirrel and pheasant and depart leaving behind several tonnes of rubbish
and asbestos sheeting. The forester on release is warned that failure to
clear the fly tipped rubbish immediately at his own cost is an offence. He
complains and is arrested for en vironmental pollution, breach of the peace
and invoiced £12,000 plus VAT for safe disposal costs by a regulated
government contractor.

Your assignment: How many times is the logger going to have to be arrested
and fined before he realises that he is never going to make £20 profit by
hard work, give up, sign onto the dole and live off the state for the rest
of his life?

A logger doesn’t sell a lorry load of timber because he can’t get a loan to
buy a new lorry because his bank has spent all his and their money on a
derivative of securitised debt related to sub- prime mortgages in Alabama
and lost the lot with only some government money left to pay a few million
pound bonuses to their senior directors and the traders who made thebiggest losses.

The logger struggles to pay the £1,200 road tax on his old lorry however,
as it was built in the 1970s it no longer meets the emissions regulations
and he is forced to scrap it.

Some Bulgarian loggers buy the lorry from the scrap merchant and put it
back on the road. They undercut everyone on price for haulage and send
their cash back home, while claiming unemployment for themselves and their
relatives. If questioned they speak no English and it is easier to deport
them at the governments expense. Following their holiday back home they
return to the UK with different names and fresh girls and start again. The
logger protests, is accused of being a bigoted racist and as his name is on
the side of his old lorry he is forced to pay £1,500 registration fees as a
gang master.

The Government borrows more money to pay more to the bankers as bonus's are
not cheap. The parliamentarians feel they are missing out and claim the
difference on expenses and allowances.
You do the maths.

Am Surprised your teacher got away with this but then again my history teacher proudly flew the Deep Southern USA flag at the back of the class room and used to call Arabs tea towel heads, put a cloth over this face and said "look am wearing a burka" lol

Indeed, and besides, if anyone of an ethnic minority/foreign nationality wants to be offended down your way, they can just visit Trago Mills!

Considering most of the work force are polish, that isn't likely!

They often chose not to settle down here, due to the more conservative attitude of the region.

That worries me greatly. Currently conservative with a small "c", soon to be Conservative with a big "C" perhaps, if the Cameron effect takes hold?

A lot of the SW is Lib Dem territory, the remainder conservative...

In the European elections Labour finished Seventh....

Lib dems have no influence in parliament, thus are a wasted vote.

That's not entirely true, and besides, the reason why the number of seats they get is far lower proportionally to the percent of the vote they get (not got figures off hand but IIRC it is 20% of the vote, 10% of the seats), is down to the establishmentarian voting system that we use in this country. This supports two large parties, with the governing party having such a large majority they can effectively do what they want. Other countries in Europe seem to manage quite happily with a fairer proportional system, but for some reason we can't manage that.

Who would you say vote for then, given that Labour recently finished SEVENTH in the Euro Elections behind the Cornish Nationalists (given the SW Euro Region is Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Former Avon, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Gibraltar this shows how little support they have in the SW)

Seems a lot of people are dissatisfied with the Lib Dems after their shambolic running of many local authorities. Just look at Devon for example, where the Lib Dems lost 19 seats; 18 to the Conservatives and 1 to the Greens.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Council_election,_2009

I'd certaintly never vote for them after their disregard for local democracy and shambolic running of local services in Bristol pre-2008 elections.

How does it "do the job" when we now have NO choice in major political parties. It's like chosing between death by hanging and death by electrocution! There's very little difference between Brown and Cameron in terms of policy, although the presentation is much different. But sadly that exemplifies modern society, style over substance.

The Lib Dems are far from perfect, and I dislike the way the leadership has recently taken the party to the centre in order to appease middle class voters. This has resulted in them dropping key policies such as increased income tax for the rich, dropping tutition fees (IIRC) and the adoption of the Euro, which just makes the party look like a joke. If you believe in something, stand by it. I predict, as Mojo has alluded to, that the Lib Dems will get a warning in the next election (possibly a 5 - 10% fall in seats), which will hopefully result in some new policy at the top.

Enough of that discussion though.

George Bush, Richard Nixon etc. got in in the USA thanks to the FPTP system (and a bit of creative vote counting in the case of the former).

 - Just because us and US use it, doesn't make it good. First Past The Post is quite frankly, crap! (In my opinion, Coalition Government far better)

Hitler made it into Germany thanks the '6 P's to Power'

Propaganda - Joeseph Goebbels
Polarization - Nazi Party
Policies - Nationalism, Anti-Semitism, Anti-Communism, Dictatorship, Lebensraum
President - Political Games with Hindenburg, Hitler put Hindenburg's fear about Communism at bay
Personality - He was ''a great man'' until March 1933 (when he passed the Enabling act). He promised and delivered the people what they wanted, Work, Cruch Communism & most of all, overthrow the Treaty of Versailles.
Punch Ups - Attacking Communists in the street, smashing up their meetings.

Agreed. Coalition government allows for a wider range of policies to be taken into consideration AND parties are forced to work together rather than against each other in one big shouting match.

To be honest, if we hadn't left Germany in such a bad position (war guilt, reparations etc.) after World War I, Hitler would have never got into power. I think the US and to a certain extent the UK understood this; it was mainly the French who were pushing for punishment and retribution.

We vote for a political party based on our preferences, not so they all work together for one goal - people have different opinions and FPTP allows the majority decision to be represented. I admit, there are flaws to it, however the prospect of having an equal split in parliament would make it incredibly inefficient, nobody would have to power to argue such a point. If we had proportional representation lunatic parties such as the BNP would probably pick up a few seats and cause problems. Perhaps they would be the next Nazi party...

Nah... They're not organised enough. Nor could anything be done as efficiently... ;)

But hasn't FPTP proved Britain hasn't got a clue? Who voted in Labour? At least, as CeliaDrummond says, they would have to learn to work together with each other as nothing would get done.

I doubt BNP would become the next Nazi Party anyway as it would all be done under Proportional Rep. as they would be stuck with their couple of seats. I can't see Mr Griffin passing an Enabling Act or everyone agreeing that he is what the Country needs to crush Communism in the UK!!

In 2005, Labour got 35% of the vote, the Tories got 32% and the Lib Dems got 22%. How is it right, then, that Labour have basically carte blanche (not sure if that's the right term but it sounds clever) to do what they want? In theory, the Lib Dems and the Tories could form an alliance and just block everything Labour try to do, which would be completely unproductive.

The only wasted vote is the one that's not used. If everyone who actually wanted to vote for LD did so, you'd find that they'd get more seats.

As for the PR debate... well, we have limited PR up here in Scotland. SNP government, Labour are a seat or two behind them, LD and Tories have a smaller number of seats, two Greens and Margo MacDonald. Where's the loonies and the racists? Nowhere. At first, we had a couple of morons (Tommy Sheridan and some Senior Citizens Party guy) both of whom were voted out at the next election. That said, the BNP have a stronger pull in parts of England so PR might work for them if they target enough of the poor parts of London, Leeds and Manchester...

Back to the original subject... if you believe that Islamification's a threat to us... well the rolling Americanization (sic) is surely worse. Not only does that pose more of a threat to the British way of life, it's actually happened over the past few decades and no-one's noticed it. Music, television and food is increasingly going to the American way, and we don't complain about that. Even politics; Blair's foreign policy, if you remember, was to nod along with whatever Bush said.

So, a billionaire should be paying the same tax as someone on the minimum wage?

Why shouldn't they?

If you are successful then shouldn't you have a right to as much of it as possible? The current tax policy discourages people from working hard, I know people in the top tax band and quite frankly it is a disgrace - they don't use public services any more than somebody on a lower wage?

Presumably it would be fair to charge somebody who earns £100,000 a year 10 times as much as somebody else earning £10,000p.a for an equivalent train fare.

I do agree that there are certain circumstances that this is not feasible, however taxes are far too high.
