The signalling regulations keep referring to module T2, however this seems to have been withdrawn. Instead there are a series of handbooks and one of these details "blocking" the line. Are you no longer allowed to run trains through what used to be a T2? If this is the case then why have an option to "block" the line at all? You could just use a T3 for everything.

You never could run a train through any form of T2.
They had to be given up and retaken.
The only time trains can run in a possession are under T3 or T4 and then only engineering trains directly concerned with that possession.
Never a passenger or normal freight service.
T2 possessions were used for activities that could be given up at short notice.

I seem to remember trains getting stopped at the edge of what I thought was a T2, held until the line was clear and then let through by a handsignalman. Maybe I'm getting confused though as it seems handsignalmen are not allowed to be used for this.

What you are referring to i believe was the old T2H with site and distant handsignaller. The train was allowed to pass the distant handsignaller only (located i believe something like 2 miles from the site handsig and therefore the site of work) though i cannot go into much further detail as have never dealt with or worked anywhere that ever required this method of working

This method was used in rural areas under BR although having said that in the 1970s, OHL headspans were erected under such arrangements.

From sometime in the 1990s the method became less used because of the advent of mobile telephony, and has now finally been withdrawn.

Incidentally a T2 is a Block NOT a Possession. There is a difference. A Block is a temporary blockage to the line whereas a Possession is the formal transfer of the line from the Operating Department or whatever term they wish to be known by this month to the Engineering dept.

So it's not longer allowed to have a T2 block and then clear the line every 30 minutes to let a train through?

T2 is no more, instead it is referred to as a line blockage which is essentially very similar to the old t2

It doesn't help much that the signalling regulations still refer to T2 and that the details of the line blockage seem to be in a COSS handbook that I wouldn't have thought signalmen would be issued with.

T2 module has been withdrawn. New signaller instructions now in TS1 reg 13

For a while we were still using the old T2 forms whilst taking a 'line blockage'.
Confusing.
Why did they have the change it? Its practicaly the same.

It's part of the new approach to the rule book, reducing the number of modules and issuing handbooks for different duties.
