SWR Repaints and Refurbishments

Strangely they haven't done the 1st class on 159014. I've never liked the SWT refurbishment of the 1st class - the old red seats were more comfortable. It's a pity that they don't just put the new moquette on top of the existing seat padding - still perfect after 26 years in the STD class. At least they've thought about us and refurbished the driver's seat. I understand that the charging points are not in place though. Bit confusing with interior colours though - some are grey and others still light blue.

Ummmm, you are aware that the seat padding is not that in them when new? I think the current overhauls are at least the second time it has been replace.

I've been driving them for over 20 years and the padding as far as I'm aware has never been changed before and have always been the most comfortable seats on the railway.... probably.

I wouldn't say 'slightly' either! I'm not really sure that the Bournemouth incident, which only happened about a month ago, can take much of the blame either, the first units went in for refurb last year and haven't been seen since. Not really the fault of a depot collision in the middle of 2018.

Got some intel from someone who works in SWR's fleet department that the programme for the 444s/450s is slightly behind schedule, what with the Wimbledon derailment & the side-swipe at Bournemouth Depot.
I was told, on a more positive note, that 444044 is currently having its interior done...

444044 is still out and about the network, however 444019 is not. It hasn't been sighted on various spotting websites since 28th April and the last photo online that I can see was 19th March.

Suspect 019 could be a potential unit in for refurb or one involved in the side swipe.

Doing a bit of an image trawl on Flickr just now, I can confirm that 450s 565, 080, 086, 115 & 124 all now have SWR branding over the SWT blue.

I've given up waiting for that. I'll believe it when I see the first one.

To put it in some perspective, if the original publicised (and unrealistic) plan had been stuck to around half the units would have been done by now.

I believe they’ll either end up on South Eastern for dirt cheap, or they’ll be scrapped, although I have no evidence to support either of those predictions.

Went on a part refurbished 450. Was impressed actually but then these desiros have a good build quality

Strange having old branding inside and the orange clashed a little

They’re going to struggle to use the extra 365’s... why on earth would they spend all that money.

The idea of the 458s on the Coastway is intriguing. ASDO fitted, toilets (that sometimes work) and 5 coaches would make them suitable to an extent, that said, the 313s are purchased outright at £1 each, I can’t see them wanting to lease 20 year old stock when I’d imagine 377s are their long term aim.

I imagine so. I expect it to match the existing SWR livery with the stripes etc. Although I'm curious about the front door, as on the SWR livery on all units at the moment, it is light grey to contrast with the dark grey vinyl at the front...
