It went to Eastleigh babysitting 5735 which was on a test run for a traction fault. They were supposed to collect 5869 which needed escorting back.
Any birdies mentioned about the fate of 5868? I believe ot was only recently given parts from a unit canabilised for parts.

Interesting that of all units from Wimbledon, 5868 was chosen to escort 5735.
There's talk of it running out of C6 miles and no ones willing to pay for it's overhaul. I am a bit confused as I thought it had the C6 work whilst being repainted

For the record, 455 868 is in service today with 455 718, so fears that it had already done it's last passenger run are unfounded.

It would be interesting to learn just how close it is to running out of miles, though.

I'm so out of touch with C4, C6, C6X, C1 , C3 type overhauls etc and understand most, if not all have been descoped. What is the difference these days between a C4 and a C6 please?
C4 - think of it as below frame, so bogie overhaul (based on mileage)
C6 - above frame, so body overhaul (normally time based)

Much less common nowadays is a C3, which is in effect C4+C6.

Since posting that earlier, I've seen the diagram - it's on Chessingtons and Guildford via Cobhams most of the day.

868 returned yesterday and is in service paired with 718 today, if they are testing 735 following a traction fault, perhaps today's run was to see how it coped on it's own.
From reading elsewhere, 5869 was supposed to return yesterday after its wheel bearing fixes but due to coupling issues it was abandoned at Eastleigh and BR Blue 5868 went back to Wimbledon late as 5Z50. Perhaps today’s 5735 path could allow for its second return without trouble?

Correct other than the issue was a communication error and 5869 was blocked in at Eastleigh. 5868 only went with it yesterday as 5735 was in need of a traction test. Was easier to do it in one go than two separate runs. 5735 was ok following its test so was able to go alone today.

Heard that 5868 has been stood down from passenger service due to a motor alternator fault. Is this true?

It had a replacement motor bogie didn’t it, might be related?

Quick question - how can a unit run out of miles?
The various overhauls noted above and throughout the thread must be done at pre-set intervals, based on mileage. Once a train has ‘run out’ of miles the overhaul must be done before it can run again - unlike a car, you can’t just skip a service!

This is also the reason that Transport for Wales have been withdrawing class 150s and sending them to the shredder, while other TOCs who also operate 150s struggle on with DMU shortages - the TfW units are due major and very costly overhauls, and nobody wants to pay for them, so off for scrap they go.
