But they were turned round by Wimbledon to become the most reliable
That didn't last long. The 5-car conversion put them firmly back as SWT/SWR's most unreliable train. It's been at lease 10 years since they were decently reliable.

Maybe Wimbledon will manage to do the same with the 701s when they eventually enter service
I'm sure they will. Compare the 707s with when they were at SWR and now at SE.

There shouldn’t be a conversion course, the cabs haven’t changed and neither have any of the traction systems, when the change from 458/0 to 458/5 occured there was no conversion course, simply a reminder that the units could only be run up to 75mph
There was a conversion course for all the different equipment on the ex 460 coaches that wasn't quite the same as the 458/0
This apparently non-existent /5 conversion course also covered the coupling of units due to the new couplers and gangway doors fitted to the units.

Are any 458/4s out and about at weekends or is it just weekdays for now? Apologies if it's already been covered, I've not been keeping up to date with this thread.

Were you around when the 458s were first introduced 24 years ago? "Interesting" times.
I’m sure someone once told me a story about brake issues coinciding with use of the windscreen wiper back in the late 90s…… Interesting electrical issues as they came off the production line.

Remember reading somewhere they had an issue where they'd start to suddenly roll away...

As a passenger in the early days I remember the TMS having to be reset on nearly every trip, plus the occasional ceiling or side panel falling off. Plus sealant had to be retrospectively applied around the panelling to stop all the rattling.

The last transfer from Bournemouth to Eastleigh should be the first leg of 458518 heading to Widnes. It is usually the case that subsequent transfer from Eastleigh to Widnes will appear on RTT at a later date

Saw two pairs of /4 on Feltham last night as I passed.
Assume they'll still be out this week despite the Barnes Bridge block?

Tuesdays 5Z66 from Bournemouth TMD to Eastleigh was cancelled. This may be because 5Q64 did not arrive at Bournemouth TMD until after 5Z66 should have departed. 5Z66 has been rescheduled to run today

Yesterday I did a short journey on a 458/4.

Overall very nice, despite the bits left untouched. However, what really stood out to me was just how comfy the seats were. Well contoured, a soft base cushion and nicely raked back rather than that bolt-upright nonsense we've had to put with on new trains for far too long. Also I'd say the seats are better than the mushy, unsupportive affairs they've replaced

So, and I don't often say it, well done to SWR. Very nice job indeed.

Thank you for this information. Do you know whether the 2*450 liberated by this will replace 2*458/5 or 2*455? I presume another 458/5 will be stood down by the middle of next week leaving just 10 units, so a reduction in their number of diagrams from 5 pairs would seem likely, but I was wrong about that before.
