Not without a significant payment to drivers. In 2018 it was written into drivers contracts that every passenger train would have a safety critical (rules trained) person on board in addition to the driver, but that going forward method of operation would be driver open / driver close on stock suitable for that method of operation.

Anyway, I’m sure we’re about to get our collars felt by the mods for veering off topic!
Given the incredible difficulties faced by SWR in trying to introduce DCO with the 701s, and the compromise now reached with guards retaining door control in some circumstances I can't imagine there is an appetite to try and introduce DOO.

458/5s have returned to Reading services on a weekday, at least for today. 458030 and 458036 are on the diagram which includes the 0739 from Reading and is currently the one all-day Reading line 455 diagram.

It looks like the 458/5s to Reading today have come off the Windsor peaks diagram which is 450s this morning. I imagine these are the 450s freed up by 2R07 being 458/4s as of today

Must say I was pleasantly surprised at the 458s on 2C18 this morning, though the question remains of whether it's a one off or staying...

It's booked all this week at least.

Didn't realise a 458036 had ever existed!
I too was surprised (but not complaining) to see an all day 458 on the Readings again, indeed I'm onboard 536 now where we have been crawling behind the previous Reading train which is 26 minutes late...

Before today your train would have been a 455, crawling along in the current heat...

458412 allocated to enter service this afternoon on 2S45, 1522 London Waterloo to Weybridge.
Can anyone advise when 412 completed its conversion please?
Some of the paths for next weeks transfer from/to Widnes are now on RTT. As is normal at this stage, the onward path from Eastleigh to Widnes is yet to be uploaded. I think that this should be 458409 from Widnes and 458506 to Widnes.

Monday 12th August 2024
5Z53 0709 Leicester L.I.P. to Widnes Transport Tech

5Q62 1311 Widnes Transport Tech to Wembley Receptions 1-7

Tuesday 13th August 2024
5X64 1130 Wembley Receptions 1-7 to Southampton Central

5Q64 1531 Southampton Central to Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D

5Z66 2018 Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D to Eastleigh East Yard
Any confirmation of the units being as predicted here?

I did think that, I've caught 455s on that service previously so was enjoying every last bit of the aircon available!
I did see a number of refurbished 458s today and I think it's a shame they aren't cleared for Reading services (does anyone know why yet?), if its a choice between 8 car trains I'd probably take them over both a 450 and 455

Am I right in thinking that the numbers of the refurbished units stay the same, just changing the 5 for a 4. So when 458509 returns from Widnes it will be 458409.

So with 458/4s entering services, there will be 6 458/5s left for use on the Reading lines (until 701s replace them when staff are trained), 2 458/5s (531 and 534) returning to Porterbrook.
Presumably 701s will replace 455s before the 458/5s

It's been a long time since the 458/5s were prioritised for the Reading line. I imagine they'll continue to be used across the suburban network on diagrams where their capacity is most needed.

Back in June @WarrenTManager posted (#3116)

8531/2 are closest to the C4 mileage that means they will be off lease of the seven. The others will drop when they too reach the 750,000 miles from last C4.

so there may not be six of 458529-536 still with SWR by the time the 458/4 conversions are complete, depending upon how many miles 458532 has remaining

I'm liking that departure time of 2U04, seems appropriate ;)

May I please ask what will happen to the remaining 458 (529–536) in the future.
Forgotten is there a post previously thanks

scrap?they not that old
What usefully, other perhaps than SWR changing their current plans, could be done with a micro class of 8, particularly given that they are restricted to third rail?

Likely to be stripped for parts to keep their remaining sister units, and Scot Rail cousins, going.

Is that the Class 175 widely reported as destined for GWR?
