I still think you must be getting confused with another trip. From your description it sounds as if you were heading towards Basingstoke.

Platform 3 was and still is a bay platform facing west, serving FGW trains to Newbury and Basingstoke, and XC to Southampton/Oxford. Trains to West Drayton would have gone from platform 6, 9 or 10 most likely.
