Just thought I'd let anyone caught up in the problems caused by emergency engineering work at Sway (Between Bornemouth and Brockenhurst) yesterday afternoon and evening that according to my train manager this was caused by a platform that was liable to collapse.

dont think phil sayer can say collapsed platform, wonder what was broadcast! In all seriusness though, good the health and safety boys are onto it nice and quick!
A collapsing platform? :roll:What do they make them out of, rubber?

If the platform is anything like the WYPTE platforms such as Crossflatts.
The timber platforms are supported on paving slabs bedded on ballast. No concrete.
If the ballast is removed for any reason the platform support is likely to move causing the platform to subside or move.
We had to Relay and reballast through this platform a number of years back and we struggled to get the sleeper width without disturbing the platform footing.
It was impossible to get the full specification width dig due to having to leave existing ground in place as support.

No, Sway is a fairly conventional solidly built brick, concrete and tarmac type.
Little obvious reason for it to give way, unlike the many prefabricated platforms in the 'SR' which stand on rotten concrete posts...

I don't know what SWT are doing to their stations at the moment but a few weeks ago Winchester ticket office fell through the floor, well apparently there is a sizable crater anyway and the ticket office has been temporally relocated since.
