Surprising station facilities

I was surprised how many staff there were and how large the station was at Aberdeen. It all just seems unnecessarily over the top for a station that only has a few trains per hour.

Do many stations have Ladies Lounges? Coventry certainly does:

Think it's more to do with the ladies loo being there. the blokes one is accessible from outside so therefore we have no waiting room!I'll ask next time I am there.

huddersfield has (had?) a great station buffet

Actually the general maintenance and condition of Huddersfield station (with the slight exception of the subway, which is in unremarkable condition) is itself surprising, given the neglect and gradual running down of so many others, listed buildings or not. In particular, the retention of the shed roof is a delight - something that has been lost (in Britain) at so many places (but which somehow has been retained, even at low-use, remote stations in many places in, say, France)

(Of course, to to get both extremes of condition of station, one can travel for a quick journey by pacer from this, one of the finest stations in the land, to the most neglected and decaying not so very far to the south and east, elsewhere in West Yorkshire, which soon puts a lot of things in perspective.)

"Ladies' Waiting Rooms" (thus described) are (or in some cases were) plentiful along the old LMS/LT&S line to Southend, at stations either now on c2c or on the District Line of the underground. Maybe Coventry is odd as being a relatively modern station that has one.

The Sheffield Tap pub is a nice facility at sheffield station - and it provides free toilets.

Berney Arms has a shelter!

Aberdour has a waiting room, toilets, a ticket office and a garden with greenhouse!

Most stations on that line have a shelter, or just a ticket office.

1 word explaination for that mojo, oil. The prosperus grannet city has also been good enough to provide it with an ensuite shopping, leisure and hotel complex and a direct link with the bus station!

The profile of the facility at Stalybridge station, well known as it is to many of the rail and the "real-ale" enthusiasts, was further raised recently as it was one of the four establishments shown in the June 2011 issue of MODERN RAIL. Ian Walmsey has written an article on catering and on page 69, there is a picture of a very crowded bar at Stalybridge shown there.

The sleeper does terminate there, and it gets pretty busy when the Northern Lights arrives. They also stable a lot of stock in the area. Really, there should be more trains in both directions (hourly to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness, plus the London trains).
