Someone find me a new body, I've just asploded from laughing so much at that animation
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
So all movements towards London Latrine are considered "up", and all movements out of there are "down" then (Except for St. Pancreas > Derby, as Brandon pointed out above) I suppose that figures. :)
Correct. Though Quail lists the Midland Mainline as the same as the others, i.e down for away from London, up towards London.

...Though in my mind - With all good things being found up North - "Down" should really be used for southbound services IMO!
That would be a far more logical way of doing it, though this is the railways we're talking about..

I think I get ye there...Indeed, I believe that might be the line that I got my first trans-Pennine coverage on earlier this year (Running Preston > Blackburn > Burnley > Halifax > Leeds > Gjorvik) so the line itself - And that damn Hellfire incline west of Hebden <D - Is still fresh in my mind. 8)

So basically: It sounds like "up" is West, and "down" is east in that case...Right? :)
This is where it gets complicated. All lines can either share an originating point, or have completely different originating points, and sometimes have direction changes mid-route. Same goes for mileage runs/reversals.

Preston to whereever Gjorvik is:
Preston to Farington Curve Jcn: Up
(Up Slow onto Down East Lancs)
Farington Curve Jcn to Blackburn: Down
Blackburn to Burnley: Down
Burnley to Hall Royd Jcn: Down
Hall Royd Jcn to Hebden Bridge to Milner Royd Jcn: Down
Milner Royd Jcn to Halifax to Bradford Interchange: Down
(Directions change at Interchange)
Bradford Interchange to Holbeck Jcn: Up
(Up Bradford changes to Down Doncaster at Holbeck Jcn)
Holbeck Jcn to Leeds: Down

I think that Gjorvek is York?
Aye...It's the Viking name for York. I used to take the general spelling Jorvik as correct...But after going to Oslo a month ago and regularly using trains for Gjorvik as a fast way to/from the city centre, I figured that York - As we know it - Must've originally been named for the Norwegen town or city. 8)

Presumably, the spelling of Gjorvik was known over here for a while, but over time it seems that people have dropped the G as it's a silent letter...Or the correct spelling might've been lost through history mainly being passed down to most people through word of mouth, with the lack of general literacy right up until 1790CE... :)

Either way though...It seems to me that York is originally a Norwegen name, and could also be known correctly by it's Norsk spelling; Gjorvik. <D
But don't worry...I'm no spelling/grammer nazi! ;)
