Stuttgart - any recommendations?

Rail or otherwise, I've got a whole day there on Monday....

In terms of (light) rail:

• A trip on the rack railway gives a nice view unto the City (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuttgart_Rack_Railway)
• take U15 to the televison tower (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernsehturm_Stuttgart) and enjoy both the ride up there and the view from the tower

For me a must in Stuttgart: The Wilhelma (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelma) my favourite zoological and botanical garden in Germany.

And to end the day: Enjoy a nice pint of beer at the Wichtel Brewery (http://www.wichtel.de/en/locations/feuerbach/startpage/) which is a 5min walk away from Feuerbach S-Bahn/Tram station

218s at Hbf working towards Zürich and on the REs to Lindau and a couple of ICs (theoretically double headed) to Innsbruck and Oberstdorf.

The rack line is part of the city transport system, which in general is fun with plenty of hill climbs (think Sheffield and treble it).

There's also a 15" gauge line in the Killesberg Höhenpark NW of the Hbf, but it will be diesel only. However there's excellent views from a tower there.

There's also the 'Standseilbahn' funicular. It goes from Südheimer Platz on the U1/U14, and is also part of the city transport system. Unlike the rack line (known as the 'Zacke'), it uses its original wooden-bodied cars.

Ah! Of course! There is also the Daimler-Benz Museum in Untertürkheim, just the other side of the Neckar from Stuttgart centre. The address is, believe it or not, Mercedesstrasse 100.

Go up the station tower (at Hauptbahnhof) to see the city centre and the station. This will soon be gone with Stuttgart 21...

I second this. And if you like walking in the woods you'll also enjoy a quick trip in the cemetery there!

The Irish pub does a lovely pint of Stowford Press Cider haha they got rid of Magners due to taste also try the Fritty bar best fast food takeaway named after the nearby strippy lol

Managed to do all of the above apart from the Museums and food / bars (found some good ones though), it was too nice a day to be indoors anyway! Thanks for the top tips, I'll post videos next week. I'm on the train to Mainz tomorrow, which is the best side to sit for scenery?

That would depend on which line the train will take, right ? There is a line on each river bank. Last pictures of the Rhine river lines I have seen show passenger trains on both banks but may be only locals on the right one, I don't know. I still remember the time when only the right bank line was electrified and used by all long distance trains, the left bank line being Diesel and freight only.

Direct services between Köln and Mainz will use the right bank (except in case of disruption). The left bank is used by local services Köln-Koblenz / Koblenz-Wiesbaden, with more freight using that side as well.

Koblenz - Mainz is left side (west) of the Rhein; Koblenz - Wiesbaden is right side (east).
