Thats cos ur in the front seat tho, right?
Front seat left actually...

I still have to deal with passengers though, I work on the "Dumb until proven intelligent" principle most of the time with them. When you get punters ask you when the next train for wales is about 5 times a day You do begin to wonder. Plus some stoats get a bit carried away railside, the last 8F run from salop resulted in a NRN emergency broadcast to stop ALL trains in the Dorrington area due to excessive stoat action on the line!

Sadly, a lot of people out there need to be treated like that. You only need to go to a large station to see the sheep pushing into the front carriage (which is marginally closer to the exit). Whilst the remainder of the train is empty, it's standing room only up front.

Today was on 1T38 (10:54 PMH-WAT 13:08.) and saw some photographers at Brookwood (not you was it Fred?), when on the approach to Woking a voice came over the PA....

"Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, this is your [aws bing] driver speaking. If there are any steam train enthusiasts on board this train then do now look to your left."

Seconds later we overtook a Mk1 support coach headed by 60019 'Bittern' working 5Z19 (11:51 AON-YVJ 16:16), in order to head tomorrow's return 1Z93 'Locomotive Exchange Special' beyond YVJ up to CLJ.

Does that explain the 1 minute late arrival of 1T38? ;)

I'VE HAD RAM LOADS OF TIMES!!

I laugh everytime :) He used to just sound like he was speaking another language. I think he got told off, as now he's stretching out his words and putting a weird accent on.

I have a recording of him on my computer.

Another video of Ram I always panic when he says "Stoeeeek awwwn Treaant" cause I always mistake it for Stockport.

"This is the RAM speaking"

Yes, I've had "The Ram" serveral times too. He is truly a legend. I have to agree with the man on the video, all that talk about being 'a ram' could be construed as perverted ;)

The other guy,
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mQNwBTlUK7g&feature=related
is 'Kevan' (note the unusual spelling!) He is a Manchester based XC guard, who seems to love working loco-hauled/HSTs. The amount of times he was on the 90+mk2+dvt set was ridiculous (it may have just been a coincidence, but he must of been on it 7/10 times that I'd do it!) He also seems to do the evening run of the NQY-MAN 'Holidaymaker' often (he did that both times I travelled on the evening run last year). He always does very OTT announcements. I also remembering saying, on the trains with opening windows, something like 'Don't put your head of window, or else you may get decapitated- in his standard jovial way :P!! I do seem to remember him having a go at a crank once on the 90 for having his head out of the window.....

There is (or was) another XC guard who was very eccentric too. I think his name was Malcolm, and he was based at New St. He used announce his trains in a very 'posh' OTT voice, and say things like 'Royal Leamington Spa', 'Kensington Olympia for London', and even once, Gatwick Airport for The World'!!! I think he was boat enthusiast, going by the amount of boat shaped badges he wore on his red Virgin blazer.

Just a quick aside, that video states the train is leaving Bolton... do Virgin Trains actually serve Bolton anymore? Or is it like Solihull and Didcot which only get a service during engineering works - the latter two are AXC now of course.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to say that the buffet car is open for a range of hot and cold snacks... but I'm afraid we didn't get a delivery at Newcastle, so I can't"

"Oh, and to the guy in coach L, look love, smoking's been banned for a year, so put it out or have a nice chat with the BTP."

Yes, VWC do serve Bolton, but only when the 20:10 Glasgow to Manchester Picc isn't being diverted/terminated at Crewe.

The 04:58 Manchester Picc to Glasgow, however, runs non-stop between Manchester Picc and Preston, and so, doesn't call at Bolton.

Also, they used to on a more regular basis. It might be an old video.

Yes it is, as no day-time VWC services stop at, or run via Bolton.

The 20:10 Glasgow to Manchester Picc doesn't actually seem to be stopping at Bolton at the moment, but definately used to do so, in the Winter timetable...

Years and years ago I was on a Northern Spirit pacer from Newcastle to Sunderland, which stopped at East Boldon. From the rear cab the conductor announced all the previous stops normally and then at East Boldon the tannoy crackled into life and he started singing, to the tune of Rawhide(!) "Boldon, Boldon, Boldon... Your next stop's East Boldon... Boldon, Boldon, Boldon... Next stop!"

Which led to muted and confused chortles from the passengers. He emerged with the straightest face, opened the doors, closed the doors and returned to the cab as the train left.

Then sure enough as we left the tannoy comes on and he pipes up "Boldon, Boldon, Boldon... We've just left East Boldon... Boldon, Boldon, Boldon... Goodbye!!"

Never forgotten it, comedy genius!

When i went on Ascot's B'ham bash back in May, there was a really confused TM on the tannoy, on the approach to International

"Ladies and Gentlemen..........................erm, we're arriving at Birmingham New Street, whoops sorry this is National e-oh fudge! Birmingham International. Please get off here for."

DING DONG
"please make sure you have all your belongings with you when get off here, for the exhibition center and Birmingham airport. Regular passengers along this line should tell you this is Birmingham International"
