My only frustration when stuff like this happens (aside from the fact that the weather in this country is absolutely garbage) is the fact that there's no staff anywhere to be seen from TOCs on station concourses.

I got stuck at Manchester Victoria at around 2315, was planning to get the 2332 from Victoria to Mossley, after my initial plan to connect at Sheffield (from Loughborough) to Wakefield Kirkgate onto Mossley was scuppered when I missed the connection at Sheffield (train left as my train from Loughborough was coming in.

This wouldn't have made much difference anyway as the train from Wakefield towards Mossley was cancelled. But when I got to Victoria, I was clueless as what to do as the 2332 was cancelled.

The only visible staff were travelsafe officers who I felt bad for to be honest as they were taking abuse from frustrated people and it's obviously not in their job description to provide alternative travel options etc.

Someone visible from TPE to let those wanting to travel would have been nice, but of course no one was anywhere to be seen and I had to fork out £35 for a taxi home.

As someone who has autism these situations are overwhelming for me and not easy to deal with. No mentions of replacement transport anywhere and of course their phone line was closed.

Apart from driver's/conductors and the on board hosts/catering staff you probably won't find any TPE staff at Victoria despite the fact their trains call there, in fact all TPE Despatch is done by Northern at Victoria, the only station where you will find TPE staff at that time of night is Manchester Piccadilly as TPE have staff on there overnight virtually every night.

To be honest I'm surprised that there wasn't anyone around at Victoria as surely there must have been someone from Northern that could have helped you.

Ah that's a fair point, completely forgot that but it would make sense. I did see a couple of Northern staff but didn't think to ask them, probably a bit of stress over the whole situation to be honest.

The news article on the BBC Bristol site had this report:
Trains cancelled between London and Bristol
Bea Swallow, West of England and Georgia Eadie, West of England

Published
14 November 2025

No trains are running between London Paddington and Bristol or South Wales due to flooding on the Western line.

Network Rail said "severe disruption" was expected to last for the rest of today and passengers should make "alternative arrangements".

Roads are also closed across the west country as Storm Claudia brings amber weather warnings and heavy downpours.

Traffic monitoring site INRIX is reporting a speed restriction of 50mph and one lane closed on the M5 northbound between J24 and J23 near Bridgwater, Somerset.

A large Met Office yellow severe weather warning is in force across most of England and Wales and will be valid until Saturday at 06:00 GMT.

According to Network Rail, routes between London Paddington and Swansea via Bristol Parkway, and London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads via Swindon, are currently closed owing to flooding.

"Passengers are advised not to attempt to travel on these routes," it added.

It said tickets dated for Friday would be accepted on services on Saturday and Sunday.

In Banwell, North Somerset, congestion is building on the A371 West Street in both directions, from Knightcott Gardens to Westfield Crescent, as flooding has rendered the road "impassable", according to INRIX.

Meanwhile, drivers on the M5 northbound faced delays of more than two hours as persistent rain, a road defect and a car crash caused standstill traffic between J20 and J19, in North Somerset.

Great Western Railway (GWR) has closed the line between Chippenham and Bath Spa, affecting services between Swindon and Westbury via Melksham.

Network Rail is monitoring the water levels, but until the water recedes and the line is inspected, trains will not be running in either direction, a GWR spokesperson said.

The railway line from Gloucester to Bristol Parkway is also closed.

This will affect services in the other direction too, as trains that would form services from Bristol Temple Meads will not have been able to run down from Gloucester.

Routes from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads via Swindon are currently closed.

XC Trains through Tamworth delayed by 30+ minutes, staff are saying due to flooding between Tamworth and Burton but my service to York has just left Tamworth and done full line speed to Burton, does anyone know where the flooding actually is, or was?

How does a 50mph speed restriction prevent the operation of a service? Are paths so tight that you can't fit the WMT in on a route that carries just three passenger trains per hour normally? They might have to drop frequencies but I don't see why they have to withdraw service entirely.
For someone who uses that route a lot it’s the LNW way ehen things maybe difficult ‘eff it and give up’ (usually hoping Avanti pick up the slack).

Delays were due to track circuit failures holding two signals at danger in the Elford area. Nothing to do with flooding that I can see. Guessing the issue was fixed by the time you went through

Manchester Airport to Piccadilly has been blocked since around 1700 yesterday hampering any chances of service recovery today.

Metrolink Bury-Whitefield to remain shut most of the weekend after a tree fell on the Overheads yesterday morning.

The water has been insane around here. Was below the normal level this time last week, become a bit high over the week but has absolutely shot up in the last 24 hours. Nowhere near the highest it’s ever been, but never seen it go up this fast.

Heading to London Euston today via Crewe from Manchester. (Northern then London Northwestern). First leg of the journey I actually benefited from the 08:36 being delayed by 10 minutes, which will thankfully give me more time to connect at Crewe for the 10:13 service. A few residual delays so far and there seems to be some on Avanti as well. Glad I left early.

Suppose flooding was the easiest things for staff to say rather than explain what track circuits are to normal passengers.

Flood water that is not too deep for trains, but is high enough to touch the rails may (as in often) will cause track circuits to fail. When the water level drops, the track circuits will then resume working correctly. But the signaller will caution the next train and check that the track circuits are working correctly before running at linespeed is resumed.

Anyone know if Rotherham C actually flooded or not? They closed it as a precaution yesterday afternoon and Northern currently say it's reopening from 1400 today. Traksy maps show "T3" as if in a possession (?).

That is a good question.
I read somewhere (perhaps on the Star website) that Network Rail had disconnected the signalling as a precaution to prevent damage.
Northern were originally showing trains avoiding Central until around midday with normal service resumed.
However it would appear this has now been extended a couple of hours. Unfortunately instead of diverting services via Masborough as was the case yesterday afternoon and this morning they have decided to cancel trains instead!

Update.
Rotherham Central will remain closed for the rest of the day. Services will be diverted via Masborough.

Does anyone know the situation with 2L62 and 2H57 just outside of Cannock, I am aware one of them struck a tree? - And 1Z99 was dispatched last night but I'm not sure what happened with it.

The 2048 Bradford to Skipton did run. There was a 2 hour gap of services leaving Forster Square, which I can only imagine is far from perfect on the Triangle.

What is frustrating is people seem to be inferring a lot what is going on with the disruption from RTT which is absolutely the worst thing to do during service disruption, or that services are disrupted due to “heat” just because RTT says so because it does a very poor job of explaining delay codes. We are seeing much more information and maybe too much information isn’t all good, as it leads to such conclusions. And I’m a regular user and subscriber of RTT but I know its exact limitations.

Another issue will be incorrectly showing unit allocations, as a controller, deallocating/allocating units would be the last thing I’d do during disruption, as I’d be focussed on putting the job back together/dealing with the train service/traincrew. As I long as I know what the unit has done / is doing that can be dealt with once the service is back up and running or left for my relief when they are less busy. It’s not something, in the nicest way possible we should be relying on with comments saying they are wrong on days such as this. What a unit is displaying on RTT will be the bottom of my priority.

As long as what is input into Darwin by TOC controls are correct, other more reliable sources such as CIS and National Rail Enquiries will be accurate.

I’m sorry but I was at Forster Square during this period and nothing went out in service.

Hence why there were around 70 of us getting frustrated at the lack of services especially when it appeared things were running elsewhere.

The first service that left during the two-hour-plus window that I was there was the delayed 22.11 to Skipton.

Behind that was the delayed 22.16 to Ilkley.

The lack of information was to the usual abysmal levels from Northern with the platform staff doing their best to give whatever information they could.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

What train did you get?

Are you really saying you were at BDQ all that time instead of using an alternative route?

Multiple systems show the 20:48 did run.

We ended up on a slightly delayed 22.11 to Skipton which was the first train out of the station in nearly three hours.

What alternative route could we have used?

The services to Leeds from the Interchange were crippled and at that time of night the 662 Bradford to Keighley bus service runs hourly and was full leaving passengers behind at the Interchange.

One of the members of staff on trains that had run empty from Shipley and terminated at Forster Square said that there would be something along soon.

Obviously, the word soon turned into a two-hour-plus delay.

Trains departed BDI for LDS at 1843, 1907, 1915, 1931, 1954, etc. Yes, far fewer than normal, but if there are no trains showing from BDQ, I would head to BDI.
I have changed my plans to depart from a different Bradford station to adapt to disruption, so I'd imagine a local would be able to do that.

However, if passengers were simply told to wait for all that time, and given no alternative and just told "soon" then that is unacceptable, but I don't see how the 2048 didn't run, unless you are saying it was allowed to depart empty (despite appearing on systems as being in service)?

Where were you going, and what did staff say?

The only explanation I can come up with is that I would assume as the inward didn't run the CIS boards were showing the train as "Delayed" with nobody changing the association or expecting it would depart on time.

Obviously there were a crew present as the service left pretty much on time, presumably with a different unit and leaving any passengers who weren't on the platform behind - and when it left, the train would have dropped off the boards with no announcements, meaning that station staff and passengers elsewhere on the station were unaware.

The train definitely ran in passenger service.

A torrid time in South Manchester today: tree down on the Styal line, Stoke line blocked and only just opening southbound, another tree between Cheadle Hulme and Wilmslow reported - congrats on keeping the trains running.
There appears to be a Pendolino stuck in Macclesfield platform 1 - presumably the victim/cause of the OHLE damage (yesterdays 1H38).

1515 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston has ended up running over three hours late and as a result, has terminated at Rugby.

Something is quite poorly as Macclesfield as there is 1Z99 on the way. Looks like the 1503 ex Manchester Piccadilly cross country

The 1445 Northern train Manchester to Stoke-on-Trent broke down at Congleton.
The 1503 Cross Country service Manchester to Birmingham was stopped at the signal prior to Congleton, reversed wrong line to Macclesfield after 40 minutes, then right line to Stockport where it was terminated. This despite the passengers being told that it was to reverse again and continue to Birmingham via Crewe. Platform staff knew it was being terminated, on board staff didn't. Passengers sat there being told sweet nothing. Passengers on the platform not being told much more.
The 1515 Avanti service Manchester to London was held at Macclesfield, then reversed to just outside Stockport, then reversed again to travel via Crewe to Stoke and on to an early finish at Rugby.
Passengers alighting the Cross Country service at Stockport actually reached Stoke-on-Trent quicker than the Avanti passengers staying on board. The 1703 Cross Country service Manchester to Birmingham was the first through train south for four hours, arriving into Stoke-on-Trent at 1850 whereas the Avanti train arrived at 1856.

The 1403 ex Manchester was the last train to make it through.
1415 cancelled
1425 cancelled
1435 cancelled
1445 failed at Congleton
1503 ultimately cancelled at Stockport at 1725
1515 ultimately cancelled at Rugby after its grand tour
1525 cancelled
1535 cancelled
1546 cancelled
1603 diverted via Crewe and direct to Stafford
1615 diverted via Crewe then Stoke-on-Trent 102 minutes late
1625 cancelled
1635 cancelled
1646 terminated at Macclesfield
1703 next train to make it though 67 minutes late.

The question is what happened to passengers on the 1445 service after it failed at Congleton. A train appears to have been conjured up for a 1740 Congleton to Stoke-on-Trent extra.

Yes, it did take me 5.5 hours to get from Manchester to Blythe Bridge, roughly 43 miles. It took me 4 hours to leave Stockport, I could have walked the six miles from Manchester quicker, including stopping off for fish & chips and a couple of pints.

Where were you going, and what did staff say?

We arrived to catch the 1941 but that was showing delayed, at this point the 2011 was showing as running but then both services were cancelled.

At this stage because the main departure boards are outide of the barriers myself and others left the platforms and went back into the public side of the station that has the arrival and departure screens.

The 2048 and 2120 to Skipton were then cancelled around 2025/2030 along with other trains to Ilkley and Leeds.

At this point the Northern staff barricaded the gateline and said to wait the public side until they know when a train is leaving.

Trains were arriving but were being put out of service until they said at around 2140/2145 that the 2211 to Skipton would run and the 2216 to Ilkley.

Well, today I've done Tamworth - York, York - Scarborough, Filey - Bridlington, Bridlington - Sheffield and Sheffield - Tamworth and the only delay worth mentioning was on the Tamworth to York leg this morning of around 25 minutes, so not a bad day all in all, everything else ran within a few minutes of it's timetable.

Given how quick we can be to criticize the railway at times, I have to say well done, with how much stock must have been out of place at the end of service on Friday, the flooding, fallen trees and associated work Network Rail must have had to do, fair play to everyone involved.

We arrived to catch the 1941 but that was showing delayed, at this point the 2011 was showing as running but then both services were cancelled.

At this stage because the main departure boards are outide of the barriers myself and others left the platforms and went back into the public side of the station that has the arrival and departure screens.

This sounds very irregular to me. I wonder if it would be a good idea to email enquiries@northernrailway.co.uk with the summary you've given us here? You can do this in addition to claiming compensation for the delay.

As a result of the tree on the line between Piccadilly and the Airport, trains from Liverpool Lime Street and the Airport were curtailed at Oxford Road. Trains from north Wales were curtailed at Piccadilly.

I was out and about in the area yesterday. The above affected me getting home from Eccles. I would have stayed on to Burnage (my 2nd nearest station) and walked home. The next train from Oxford Road to Stockport was "cancelled" as it was starting from Piccadilly.

There were also delays because of drivers in the "wrong place". I jumped on the 10.33 (Blackpool North train) at Piccadilly to go to Bolton. We had to wait just over 1/2 hour at Oxford Road for another driver. The guard said the 11.06 might catch up, but in the end it did not overtake us.

I have firmly ruled out attempting a Delay Repay claim. Storm disruptions are inevitable, and rail staff who turn up will have risked or incurred inconvenience themselves to reduce our own inconvenience.

Any residual problems on the GB network today (Sunday) after Storm "Claudia"? Marches line between Shrewsbury and Newport still closed? And the section of line between North Llanrwst and Blaenau Ffestiniog? Exeter St..D. to Barnstaple? Anywhere else?

Yes, Chipping Sodbury until 14.00 at the earliest <sigh>

Due to heavy rain flooding the railway earlier today between Swindon and Bristol Parkway all lines are blocked. Disruption is expected until 14:00 16/11.
Train services between London Paddington and Swansea via Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central will be cancelled or revised.

The water has been insane around here. Was below the normal level this time last week, become a bit high over the week but has absolutely shot up in the last 24 hours. Nowhere near the highest it’s ever been, but never seen it go up this fast.
The BBC report quoted in this post says that South Wales - London passengers were being dealt with on services via Bristol Temple Meads, adding about 30 mins to the journey. I'll check what GWR is currently saying and post that

Added later:

The BBC is correctly quoting what GWR says. Screenshots below from the GWR website

GWR are essentially saying "travel, but expect to be delayed a bit"
