Storm Abigail

The Met Office has now decided to follow the American practice of naming hurricanes by doing the same with storms. An alphabetical sequence using female names has just started with the name Abigail attached to it.

I do hope this impending storm doesn't intend holding a party.

For the sake of all those called Abagail (I'm sure they have suffered enough weather related puns on their name already) I hope it is not a particularly memorable storm. One of my offspring has a name which was given to a particularly devastating hurricane many years ago and it is often the first thing Canadian people say to her when introduced. It tends to generate irrational feelings of guilt in those unfortunately so named.

The next big Storm is called Barney (after the Dinosaur) then it's Clodagh, Desmond, Eva, Frank, Gertrude, Henry, Imogen, Jake, Katie, Lawrence, Mary, Nigel, Orla, Phil, Rhonda, Steve, Tegan, Vernon and Wendy.
Clearly the Met Office don't know the alphabet.

Helen Willetts, the forecaster on BBC2 at 11.15 last night made references to the gale-force winds without actually referring to Abigail, leading me to think there may be forecasters unhappy with the Americanization of weather presentation.

...Queenie, Robert, Stella, Terence, Ursula, Vincent, Wendy, Xavier, Yvonne, Zachariah. Problem solved, consultancy invoice en-route to the Met Office... (though you need to drop one so that each letter alternates between "male" and "female" names, of course!).
