Due to a broken down train at Stockport some stations are seeing a 3 hour gap in service this evening. Which train broke down and how is it causing so much disruption given there's quadruple track?

6E10 failed with the back end across Heaton Norris.

But it may have been still occupying that track circuit which meant that section was route locked.

Yes that is correct, however, I was responding to the comment from post #5. Trains were able to run on both the up slow and up fast lines from Slade Lane junction towards Stockport , as such both 2K47 and 1V61, originating from Manchester Piccadilly were run as scheduled despite the known failure of 6E10 and it should be noted that both of these trains uneventfully passed the site of the failed freight. I am posting this solely to kybosh the supposition which is abound in this particular thread.

So why was the disruption so severe and prolonged in the event?

From RTT it looks like two southbound trains - a Pendolino and a Voyager were stopped for around 80 minutes between Heaton Chapel and Stockport around the time the disruption started.

On the Mid Cheshire we had the 1517, 1617 and 1917 from Piccadilly cancelled throughout, the 1658 from Stockport delayed and part cancelled, the 1709 and 1817 from Piccadilly delayed, as well as the 1758 from Stockport. That affected return workings as well and led to some people who commute in the 'counter peak' direction finshing work at 5pm and having to wait until 8pm for a train home as Northern didn't organise replacement buses.

It has been mooted that there was quite a serious wrong side signalling issue in that area. At least that would match the information from our control.

According to a post on wnxx a 323 was close to crashing in to a Voyager due to an error made by a signaler with the 323 driver applying the emergency brakes in time to prevent a crash.

I was under the impression it was the other way around.

Given the current campaign by Lord Adonis and the NIC to blame freight for as many delays as possible in an attempt to transfer freight from rail to road, does anyone know the definitive version as to whether freight caused this problem, or is it just another blame shifting exercise?

It certainly looks like this train caused the original problem: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/H35302/2017/12/14/advanced but from what people are saying it sounds like the problem was made significantly worse by human error.

The initial issue was caused by the failure of 6E10 (which as you know train failures also happen to passenger services). The secondary issue, the alleged close call between 1V61 and 2K47, was caused by human factors.
