no, Beckett Park campus for LMU in Headingley is in Far Headingley, right beyond Headingley Centre towards West Park Corner & Lawnswood.

As for the Kirkstall problem, I'd really like to see the original Kirkstall station (on Bridge road, next to what is now 'Old Brewery Halls', reopened. It would then seem sensible to name this station 'Kirkstall Abbey', or even 'Kirkstall Brewery', and the new station Kirkstall Forge.

How about Arsenal Underground station reverting to its correct name of Gillespie Road (apparantly it was renamed to appease a local football team, which has since moved elsewhere)

Erm, the Emirates Stadium (home of [Woolwich] Arsenal FC) is located slap bang between Holloway Road and Arsenal tube stations. So it's still the station of choice for Gooners coming from Norf Lahndahn. Gillespie Road isn't really a major thoroughfare like Holloway Road so if it is to be renamed anything it should be "Highbury".

Talking of identical/similar names, there are two Whitchurches on the ATW network - Whitchurch (Salop) and Whitchurch (Cardiff) as well as the one in Hampshire operated by SWT.

One could be renamed I'm sure - perhaps New Whitchurch for the Cardiff one given its Welsh translation is Eglwys Newydd. The famous Velindre hospital is nearby so perhaps Velindre would be another suggestion; although there is a village called Felindre near Pontarddulais.

Clock House in Beckenham could become Beckenham Road to tie in with the nearby tramlink station.

Wanstead Park is nowhere near the park, so should be either Wanstead Flats (about half-a-mile away) or Forest Gate North.
And to tie in with the 'too close together' thread, Maidstone Barracks is not the nearest station to the barracks, that being Maidstone East. So, maybe it could be Maidstone (Buckland Hill), which is the road it's on. Or Maidstone East (Low Level) :D

Streatham Common (SRC) should really be renamed Streatham Vale; Streatham (STE) is much, much closer to the common than SRC.

I know I'll probably be accused of being pedantic, but looking at where the two Canterbury stations are located in relation to each other

Canterbury West should be Canterbury North
Canterbury East should be Canterbury South

I wouldn't say anything about being pedantic - they are most certainly reasonable suggestions - but in my opinion they are too central for the suffixes North and South. I would suggest that street-based suffixes, such as Pin Hill for East and St Dunstan for West, would be more efficient (map).

On the other hand, North may actually work on account of there being a prominent road by the name of North Lane next to the station.

Once Dudley station reopens on the Midland Metro (not for a while), Sandwell and Dudley could be renamed Oldbury (it's original name), or at least Sandwell (as it is not in Dudley at all). Dudley Port will be the interchange to get to Dudley, so the Sandwell and Dudley name could be confusing.

There's no date as yet—it's not even definitely going to happen. Given that the New Street extension isn't going to open till about 2016, I wouldn't hold out for Metro line 2 opening this decade.

The New Street extension is due to open in December 2015 and the next expansion after that will be the Wolverhampton City loop that is still awaiting a central government funding commitment.

With the cricket ground at Headlingley and known by that name it makes sense to name the station closest to it Headlingley station.

However, back to Headlingley, isn't the Headlingley university campus closer to Burley Park station?

In Leeds City Region, can I agree with Weeton going to Weeton&Huby, and Horsforth to Cookridge, however Headingley (spelling) station isn't that far from the centre of Headingley (arndale/original oak pub) and Kirkstall is down a hill. When buses used to terminate at the south end of Queenswood Drive (don't believe any so do anymore) they displayed Becketts Park. I have never heard the area described as Queenswood Drive - also queenswood drive itself is so long that it would cause confusion, in my view.
Luton airport parkway should be renamed luton parkway.

Then if any passengers wish to travel to the airport, they know the exact destination, luton airport. Makes life a lot easier!

Agree about Luton Parkway, and would also wish that the town centre station would revert to Luton Midland Road.

Since approx 2006 (when the airport shuttle bus stopped being free) there has been a ticket machine destination of Luton Airport, which has only added to the confusion.

I cannot understand why Port Talbot Parkway is so named. It is in the centre of the town and always was before and after rebuilding. It is complete nonsense.

Wiki says: "It was named Parkway in the 1980s when the old goods shed and yard were converted to a large car park, with freight handling moved to Margam Knuckle Yard, to encourage patronage of eastbound commuters from the Neath and Swansea Valley areas. The idea was that overall travel time could be saved by catching the train at Port Talbot instead of Neath or Swansea because of the low line speed west of Port Talbot and the limited parking at the other two stations."

I know what it says on Wiki but you have left out the bit that says that it is not a Parkway Station per se. The Name Port Talbot Parkway is plain wrong and misleading. Anyone planning to travel there, from outside the area, would be under the impression that it was situated somewhere along the M4 or A48. It is a town centre station. Yes, it has a car park but so do hundreds of other stations. There's an even bigger car park at Bridgend but it remains 'Bridgend'.

The Parkway name was adopted for 'out of town stations' the first being, of course, Bristol Parkway at Stoke Gifford.

Portsmouth Harbour should be Portsmouth Gunwharf, Portsmouth & Southsea should be Portsmouth City as it isn't near Southsea at all but is close to the Guildhall, the bars and clubs and also the retail area.

Portsmouth is another example of a place with two "main" stations where neither's name obviously suggests the "centre" - must confuse some visitors.

On a marginally related subject, when did 'Stainforth and Hatfield' become 'Hatfield and Stainforth' and why?

And then perhaps Fratton would revert to its old name of Fratton and Southsea?

Same goes for Didcot.

Portsmouth I agree with, with Port & Starboard becoming 'Portsmouth City' or 'Portsmouth Central' depending on how 'Central' it is. Fratton & Southsea seems reasonable, but I think Harbour can just remain Harbour, it's fairly descriptive. The question is whether you want to concentrate the Southsea traffic at Fratton or 'City/Central'.

Regarding Portsmouth...

The problem with naming any of the three stations in the southern half of Portsea Island after Southsea is that none of them really serves Southsea at all. Of the three, only Fratton only works as it should do. Portsmouth & Southsea falls flat both on the Southsea note above and also because it fails to show how central it is (to those who don't know, the answer is very); Portsmouth Harbour fails because the physical harbour is the massive area of water surrounded by Portsmouth, Gosport and Portchester.

I think Fratton should stay as it is, but the two stations currently named after Portsmouth should follow Matt Taylor's example and change to "City" and "Gunwharf". As for Southsea, they should complain to the councils in the area for not giving them the light rail system they should have received. Alternatively, build a new line to Southsea, although unless you plan to tunnel under the southern part of the island I would like to know where it is planned to end up!

Or just provide a connecting limited stop bus service that runs Fratton - Southsea - Clarence Pier - The Hard. That also works :p

Cardiff Queen Street has always been a bit of a mouthful for me, and I'm not keen on stations near each other having similar names.

Given that the nearest other station called Queen Street is in Glasgow, couldn't the "Cardiff" part be dropped or the station renamed Cardiff East?

Also Maesteg Ewenny Road could be Maesteg Bethania or Maesteg Royal Oak.

1) Maryland to F****ing S****hole. Standard bruv. <(

2) Wanstead Park to Forest Gate High Street. It's not even in Wanstead! From wiki...
Despite its name, Wanstead Park Station is not situated in Wanstead but in Forest Gate - and it is not near Wanstead Park but Wanstead Flats.

3) Ebbsfleet International to Dartford International.   (yes, before anyone mentions it, I have read the history and know this was the proposed name!)
