Manors is hourly, but it only has a service in the middle of the day. I wonder how much more it'd attract if it got a peaktime servic too.
It does. First s/b arrival is 08:15 and last n/b departure is 18:27.

Aylesbury Vale Parkway will have to be pretty severely reconfigured for EWR services by 2017. I'm not sure if that'll entail the demolition of the ramp, replacement with a footbridge and extension of the current platform line to meet the main line or a new platform 2 on the existing main line. Either way it's major for a station that only opened in December 2008.

Northampton's station building is about to be completely flattened and replaced with one that's a bit more appropriate for a place of 210,000 people.

I understood that when Aylesbury Vale Parkway was built to allow easy extenstion to the E-W line, or that the E-W line can be altered to meet Aylesbury Vale Parkway as no doubt the line will have to be upgraded and re-aligned.

Its still a better service than.........Heysham Port.= which is only open if there is a sailing.......

I don't think Heysham Port's in quite the same category. There is only one service per day (all the way from/to Leeds) but it is timed to connect with one of the twice daily ferries to the Isle of Man. As the other ferry leaves Heysham Port at 0215 it's disappointing but not terribly surprising that there's no connecting train.

It's not a great service but it's more useful than most of the others mentioned.

I was on the Heysham Port service last week. Just to knock the branch off. There were about 30 -40 passengers on board both ways. Not the most exciting of routes but I did get a decent cup of tea at the terminal. I could imagine this train being busy during the summer season.

I have been on the route to cross it off as well, The station is not in Heysham itself but the port so its only purpose is to serve that. The branch sees a large about of freight as well for the Nuclear Power plant at Heysham so closing it would be pointless.

Lincolnshire council wants an hourly service on this line.

I know :D

I am working with a number of the local councils in the area to drum up support again via the media to highlight the shocking state of services on this line as part of the 2014 Northern Rail franchise

To be fair an every 2 hourly service would be enough with either a new Doncaster - Gainsborough Central - Brigg - Barton - Grimsby/Cleethorpes service run by Northern or East Midland Trains running a Nottingham - Worksop - Gainsborough Cental - Brigg - Grimsby/Cleethorpes service over this line.

When were services on the line reduced to their current level?

I have done it a couple of times now - once back in the summer and again about 3 weeks ago. Both times were reasonably loaded (the last time, there were a fair few people waiting to get on as the inbound service arrived!)

Islip will close at some point before rebuilding when the line is doubled for East-West Rail/Evergreen3 in 2015. The current single platform occupies the double track formation. Bicester Town is also being rebuilt as mentioned earlier in the thread.

Depends if they build the other platform first, you could probably keep it open that way.

On the Manchester Metrolink Mosley St and Woodlands Road are scheduled for closure some time next year

Woodlands Road has already had one direct replacement in service: Abraham Moss, and with a bit of luck, the second one, Queen's Road, will be along soon.

Mosley Street will become the newest one with no replacement won't it? Interesting because it's not being closed for lack of custom at all!

Does anyone think that a station in Heysham village could be viable?
Extending the hourly Lancaster-Morecambe trains would be the obvious plan.

How big is Heysham 'village' and how far is it from Morecambe?

I was wondering this too. Morecambe & Heysham seem contiguous from the OS map. The population of Heysham Village is as Coolguy 22468 above states about 7'000 however the three Heysham wards (North, Central, & South) account for almost 17'000 people.

This population seems spread along the coast in a ribbon development towards Morecambe - the railway runs behind the settlement. I think a shuttle bus to Morecambe Station to connect with the Lancaster train would offer a faster end to end service esp. since the closure of the direct line to Green Ayre Station.

That said what would be the forum's views on a local Morecambe Bay service. Lancaster - Heysham - Barrow all stops with reopened stations at Hest Bank & Bolton-le-Sands?

The Railway Clearing House diagrams for the area can be seen here

The signaling at Morecambe isn't that good, the points are controlled by the train driver so it would need re-signaling. It would be nice but I doubt that Network rail would ever do it.

How many of the stations are poorly used because they have such a limited service, though?
Excellent point.
You only have to look at the transformation of the North London Line since investment was put in and London Overground took over the line.
In the late 70's and early 80's, the stations were run-down and unwelcoming, and service frequencies were as low as 2tph, if memory serves me correctly.
The idea of making the line freight-only was even mooted at some point. Passenger numbers were a fraction of what they are now, and understandably so. If missing one train by seconds then forces you to wait 30mins, you're going to look at options other than rail for your travel needs.
Looking now at the huge numbers of passengers touching in and out on their Oyster cards on that route, to paraphrase 'Field Of Dreams'...
if you build it, they will come ;)

Settle and Carlisle was like that, it was served by 2tpd and was going to close. Now it is served by much more and is seen as the main Carlisle to Leeds line.

Surely this is a similar situation to Fishguard?

Although Fishguard and Goodwick didn't have a regularly-served station right down the road (as Heysham does with Morecambe).

Also if I'm being pedantic I should point out that neither station is in Fishguard, they're both in Goodwick. ;)

I wasn't suggesting they were identical, just that in the case of Fishguard a stretch of railway with only 2 trains per day to connect with ferries now has an increased service to suit a questionable market. If we are saying there is a stronger case for non boat trains to serve Heysham than fine.

The West London line used to be like that (between Willesden Jn and Clapham Jn) - about 4tpd in the 1980s plus the intercity trains at Kensington Olympia, now 5tph each way and in desperate need of more carriages. The developments at Westfield Shepherd's Bush and Imperial Wharf have helped of course.

In fact West Brompton NR station wasn't reopened until Silverlink's tenure.

With regard to the point that you make, the reasons why stations at both Hest Bank and at Bolton-le-Sands will not see them reopened is the same reason why stations between Preston and Lancaster will also not be reopened and that is because they lie on the line of the West Coast Main Line. There have been calls on threads on this forum over the past two years that I can recall, making similar tentative calls for both a new railway station to serve Lancaster University and for the reopening of Garstang and Catterall railway station.
