what about golf street, barry links and balmossie (on the dundee to aberdeen line)? Both have got 2 services per day but no sunday service. Less than 100 passengers per year, no facilities like parking. You can see barry links and golf street from carnoustie itself and every time I take my dog for a walk, I usually take 10 mins to walk from carnoustie to golf street.

Scotrail came up with an idea about 12/18 months ago to review stations that were within 1 mile of another station (I think that was the criteria) to see if they could be closed. I think about ten stations were short-listed for this review.

My local station, Airbles, was threatened with closure and I know there were protests. Airbles does have a high usage each day to serve commuters and shoppers between Motherwell and Glasgow primarily. It has now been confirmed that this un-manned station will not be closed (at the moment!!!)

Did anything ever come out of this Scotrail money-saving idea? Will any stations be getting closed?

Imagine if the driver forgets to stop at these stations getting one train per day, or per week. :D

Much of this does show how much of a farce the current rules regarding closing stations and lines are. Yes, the network does need to be prevented from easily closing lightly used lines and stations. But there really should be a more grown up way of resolving it than having a single train a day or week in one direction only stop at a station. That's just farcical.

This might be a bit much for the 'they shall not be closed' movement.

But it is not in the interests of very many to keep poorly used stations open. It is in the interests of many more to open new stations where a case can be made.

To help NR, TOC's, PTE's and other interested authorites why not link an opening (somewhere) to a closure (somewhere else) on the basis of a holistic approach to the network?

Theres a couple of stations on the line from Preston to Blackburn that have become request stops only, so have no official service anymore

Sorry, but a request stop is still a stop. They are new to the East Lancs line but common enough elsewhere. The stations concerned have an hourly service which is very different from the others in this thread.

How many of the stations are poorly used because they have such a limited service, though? Travel volume has boomed since many of these were reduced to their present service level.

Some of the stations that I have in mind are miles from just about any population.

I'll trade 'my' Shippea Hill (annual usage less than 1000, nearest village Prickwillow est. pop. less than 500 around 6km away) for 'your' Low Moor (within Metropolitan City of Bradford) any time you like.

Oldham Werneth never got a direct replacement

Is not the proposed Westwood station that will be on the new Metrolink line once constructed through Oldham town centre meant to be serving the needs of that area and the existing temporary Metrolink line from Oldham Werneth to Oldham Mumps removed at the time of that re-opening.?

They're finally doing that? They've been talking about that for ages!!

General information on the early history of the above matter

On 3rd June 2011, the Department for Transport requested from the Office of Rail Regulation that they ratify the proposal to close the Manchester Metrolink station on Mosley Street.

After satisfaction that s32(8) of the Railways Act 2005 had been met, in October 2011, ratification of the station closure was effected and that under the powers vested in the Office of Rail Regulation under s32(9)(b) of the Railways Act 2005, the Office of Rail Regulation required the operator of the Mosley Street station to display a notice of the aforesaid ratification at the station for a period of four weeks.

Matters from that period onwards have been in the hands of TfGM and the service operation company.

It's not a station closure as such, but the two platforms at Battersea Park which currently serve the trains on the London Bridge to Victoria route via Peckham Rye will no longer have passenger services from the December timetable, when the new Overground line from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction opens (unless there are plans for some sort of parliamentary service?)

There will be a remaining parliamentary service between Battersea Park and Wandsworth Road when services are diverted to Clapham Jn and have found a 0618 departure from Battersea Park but there may be others.

Manors in Newcastle has gone from being an important station on the edge of Newcastle City Centre (pre-Metro days) to having a minimal service (80s-90s) which has now gone up to hourly, so there must be a case for seeing if a regular service will increase patronage sufficiently to decide if the station is worth keeping?

For a while I think I read somewhere that Bromsgrove was only served by 5 trains per day and only had 1 platform and the amount of passengers was minimal, now it has a regular service and the amount of passengers is much higher. It just shows if stations have proper services then a lot can happen.

IIRC, there were very few services calling at Bromsgrove in the 1980's. At times it was probably even lower than 5 per day.

The Coryton branch in Cardiff also used to be served at peak hours only in the early 1980's, if my memory can be trusted. The line, and the stations on it, are now pretty busy all day too!

Although Bromsgrove is still not very well-served on a Sunday (only four trains to Birmingham, the first being mid-afternoon).

As an aside, I don't understand why there is not more recognition of the importance of Sunday as a shopping day now. Mid afternoon trains are there to cater for the returning weekenders, but they are no use for someone who wants to go on a day's retail therapy to Birmingham!

Especially being as the shops shut at 17.00 anyway, so if you take the first train to Birmingham (the 15.10) you'll get at most 80 minutes of shopping done.

(Although it is possible to get from Bromsgrove to Birmingham earlier on a Sunday, it can't be done on one ticket...)

Mosley Street will shut when TMS is operational in the metrolink's city zone for PIDs to become operational

What is the official status of Newhaven Marine?

I think I read somewhere that GMPTE wants to give Reddish South and Denton a regular service of something like 3 trains per hour. That is a bit of a contrast considering Network Rail wanted to close both stations.

Its still a better service than Denton and Reddish South! 1 train per week. You can add Ardwick with its one train a week and various others inlcuding Clifton (two trains per day both heading north) and Heysham Port.= which is only open if there is a sailing. Theres a couple of stations on the line from Preston to Blackburn that have become request stops only, so have no official service anymore

I don't think Heysham Port's in quite the same category. There is only one service per day (all the way from/to Leeds) but it is timed to connect with one of the twice daily ferries to the Isle of Man. As the other ferry leaves Heysham Port at 0215 it's disappointing but not terribly surprising that there's no conecting train.

It's not a great service but it's more usefult than most of the others mentioned.
