Hi, Im trying to find a rail station, which was on a grassed(?) embankment, high off the rd. In London, from the 80's. There weren't so many stations then. It wasn't in the country, but a built up area, with an industrial section.
There was a factory just round the corner from there, who made cases.

It mite have been a Network southeast station
They couldnt help me, tho.
Anyone know
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum! Can you narrow it down a bit? Was it north or south of the River Thames, for example? W, NW, N, NE, E, SE, S, SW of central London would be even better!

Packing cases? Suitcases?
These were vulcanised fiber cases. I have asked the various companies who use V/F. They can't tell me where there was a factory in London in the 80s.

Thats the problem. I went from Paddington, as thats the station I came in from.
To get back to the West.

I simply cannot remember. there can't be many with a rd running alongside it. There was no tunnel or bridges on this rd going thro the station I got off at.
I did find it once on Google maps.

But since then...

To be clear: the station was on a line served by trains from Paddington: is that correct or probable? Were the trains BR or LT? Did you change? Presumably it is not far out as you would have changed at Reading. Can you remember if it was two or four track, or even one?

The station was high off the rd which ran alongside it. I had to change to a tube from Paddington. I think it was 2 track.

Definitely went from Paddington then a tube.
After that...

Burnham? Hanwell?
Station was not ground level, but high up.

So it was on a tube line running through Paddington. That means that it could well be the Hammersmith & City, which uses the larger surface size trains. There is also a possibility that you caught an Edgware Road-Wimbledon train from Paddington, but you would have to be well down the line for raised stations. If it was small underground trains, then it could have been the Bakerloo, but the stations well above road level were out beyond Wembley.

Thanks so it kinda narrows it down a bit.

Just cannot remember where it was. How many high level stations on a steep embankment are around there then. With a road runing along the bottom.

Try Ladbroke Grove, Latimer Road or Goldhawk Road on the Hammersmith line. (And its other stations for good measure.)

On the Wimbledon line try Parson’s Green, Putney Bridge and Southfields…and the rest.

If the District Line is in play, how about stations towards Richmond or Ealing? Turnham Geen, Stamford Brook, Ravenscourt Park etc are quite elevated as I recall. Aren't some of these are two platform stations, even though the Piccadilly Line shares the route?

Ok how about any Network southeast stations in use in the 80s. Were any of those elevated quite high, with an industrial area around the corner.

Latimer Road is my first thought, there are still areas of light industry around there today

Also looking for a steep (grassed) embankment. All the ones I've seen so far go over a bridge or a tunnel.

What about the Greenford branch? Is any of that elevated enough to meet the description?

( I do think the suggestions of the Hammersmith direction are correct, though... )

South Bermonsey is pretty high and the area was/is industrial, but it's complicated to get there from Paddington and as for grass......!

This is based on a hunch, a poor memory of what things were like 40 years ago, and consulting an ordnance survey map.

Have you looked at Burnham and Taplow just to the west of Slough?

There the Great Western Main Line is above the River Thames flood plain, crossing the river at Maidenhead.

In the 1980s there was still quite a lot of light industry in the area because of its good location near to the A4 and M4.

No, thats not it.
This was high up from the rd which was running along side it, then u turned off the rd an went down to a factory which made vulcanised fiber products.

Can you clarify this? Was the station you are looking for on the main line into/out of Paddington or on the Tube line you took from Paddington?

If the latter, it can only be on the Hammersmith & City towards Hammersmith, or the District beyond Parsons Green towards Wimbledon, as the surface sections of the Bakerloo and the H&C towards Barking are both alongside main line (therefore not double track) except for Watford High Street which is in a cutting.
If the former, I can only gthink of the Greenford branch, as the GWML is more than double track at least as far as Reading, and the Thames Valley branches have al been single since the 1960s.

Or did you go from Paddington on the main line and change to the Tube (presumably at Ealing Broadway, or just possibly West Ruislip)

Yes I had to go on a tube, then I think it was a train (network southeast) to an over ground station.
It was the 80s, tho.

To be honest I didnt think it would be so hard to find it.
It was high up on a step embankment (mite have been grassed)

A road ran along the bottom, next to it.

There were no tunnels, or bridges.

There was industrial area around the corner.

It was around the early 80's.

All suggestions so far do meet those all those criteria.

Only those who live or lived there would know the area, it would seem.

I only went there once to pick up a customised drum case.

Thanks for all ur help anyway.

Are you saying that you arrived at Paddington, took a tube and then a Network Southeast train to your high level station? If so, this opens up a much wider (almost limitless!) range of possibilities.

Looking at this from a different perspective, if by any chance you know the name of the supplier of your drum case, some searching through old business directories might produce an address - hopefully within walking distance of your elusive station.

Well, this now opens a mass of possibilities. Using a tube means that you could have gone under London to just any about other terminal and then to any station served from it. Did you travel on one of the deep tube lines with small trains (only possible to stand up in the centre aisle) or normal size stock?

I do a certain amount of identifying photos of unknown locations, but I need at least one solid detail, even if it is obscure. We don’t seem to have that here.

You might be better trying to find out the identity of the drum case manufacturer and working back. Have you tried old trade or music magazines?

I wish I did. I contacted several companies making such products. none of them could help me with a location in or around London in the 80s.
But I went there to pick it up an took it back home.

But Network South East was the name for all the local and suburban services in a very wide area around London: Overground was just the brand name for a bit. So did the train or station specifically say London Transport Overground, or was the train a Network South East one (*). Use or omission of capital letters is important here.

* - Others can explain the exact relationships if need be: I was elsewhere for much of this period.

This was the map in the 80s:
Sorry, no it wasn't. "London Overground" as a brand did not exist until 2007. "Over ground" (two words) describes many stations that are not part of the "London Overground" network (including many on the London Underground!) And there was no service between Olympia and Willesden Junction until 1994
