With all the publicity relating to the recent Movie Bob the Cat I was thinking it was time we updated our Station Cats Locations.

Im a cat lover so probably biased but Id say a cat at a station would be a great asset. Pest controll, great at scratching faredogers, fantastic at cumforting pax and kids and someone for the booking office clark to talk to.

Redruth station has Hector,who has lived there since 2013. He even has his own kennel on the up platform.

The one who adopted St Albans has been traced and re-homed to North London - "Brian" turned out to be a female.

Probably not the two mogs are both Newtown girls, one Siamese is from Crickhowell the other from Bridgend none of which are Welsh speaking areas.

If we had a station cat here a "big cat" would be needed for the evening shift - it could enforce no smoking and stop fast food packaging being left under the seats 5 yards form the bin. It would also sort deter the drug dealers/users who descend in the evening. For the day shift a big fat friendly ginger mog whose everyone's friend will do.

There are still various animals knocking about the railways, with greater or lesser notoriety!

Not quite a cat, but Skegness station has had a mascot in the form of a beagle dog called Rupert for many years - he belongs to a volunteer from the community rail partnership.

The GCR at Loughborough has always had cats and still does - Stanier from the shed passed away a few weeks ago (one of several cats of that name to have lived there) along with a few others. The operations department also have a large female tabby by the name of Onslaught who lives in their building just off the north end of the platform. As is traditional on the railway she just turned up one day and made the place her own.

He's a dignified old boy to be fair! He usually has other concerns though, like squirreling treats out of the station staff and fusses from the train crew. He's also got a little brother now whose name escapes me, a cocker spaniel, who he has to keep in order.

There were some minor celebrity cats at Manchester Oxford Road which killed the mice within the station. Given that the station is made out of wood there were a very large number of cats there.

They may still be there but I am not sure.

There's a story I've heard about a station cat that used to flatten itself to go under the third rail, I don't know if its true or not, but I'd love to know the clearance!

I was never able to see him for obvious reasons, but Paddington ladies loo used to have a monster who, I seem to remember, was declared the fattest in Britain.
