Some trains terminate at Portsmouth & Southsea, when they could theoretically go one further and terminate at Portsmouth Harbour instead; however, it is impractical to go any further (because there's no track...). A similar arrangement, albeit with a different reason for trains to not go any further than the next station (lack of OHLE), exists at Lichfield City.

Shildon is also immediately adjacent to a large collection of preserved rolling stock

I thought the OHLE went as far as just beyond Trent Valley so that Trent Valley electrics could work south to Aston with a reversal just north of Litchfield TV.

Anyway Heath Low Level also has Heath in it's name

St Budeaux Ferry Road is also across the street from another station managed by the same TOC (to the point where the pairs of stations could be considered to be single stations with separated platforms).

Portsmouth Harbour provides an interchange between road, rail and sea in a very small area, with IoW and Gosport ferries and The Hard bus interchange literally seconds from the station. This rather rare situation also exists at Ryde Esplanade.

Middlesbrough also has a service to Manchester Airport that knackers up the WCML south of Manchester ;)

Your choices are really getting quite unoriginal now Paul! ;)

Moor Street is immediately south of Snow Hill, which leads some to name the tunnel between the two the Snow Hill. Technically, the Snow Hill tunnel is in London, and the southern station goes by the name of City Thameslink.

Some of these answers are so spurious that it almost takes the fun out of it. We need to get back to answers like Ivo's Wallace and Gromet cheese connection from a few months back not that I can remember what it was now. In the meantime, in the spirit of the thread as it is now, I'll say Starcross, as it starts with an "S", (and there must be fewer stations starting with "S" than stations that are managed by South West Trains).

I'm afraid you're mistaken in your assumption there...
Stations operated by SWT: 177
Stations beginning with S: 273
(based on a quick tally on the NRES website)

Anyway, Barnham was served by SWT until a few years back.

You might say the recent answers are spurious, but can I politely ask you to look back at the original posting that was made by our venerated and much respected administrator Mojo and see the types that he quoted. I even prefixed a recent posting with a reference to this. You just cannot change a quiz just because your view disagrees with that of the person who originally set up this particular quiz. So in the spirit of what was originally envisaged, I will say....

Cheadle Hulme is a junction station, as is Barnham

From Cheadle Hulme to Tyndrum Lower: Also has seven letters in its first word and five in the second. (If you're wondering why "Lower" and not "Upper", when trying to find a five-letter suffix the first thing I thought of was "Lower".)

We need to get back to answers like Ivo's Wallace and Gromet cheese connection from a few months back not that I can remember what it was now.

You mean this one?

I guess a mix won't hurt. So long as we don't all start saying "X is a junction, as is Y" then the thread will keep going. And sometimes we will need lousy ones to make a jump anyway...

Tyndrum Lower is a station you walk past on the West Highland Way, as is Bridge of Orchy, also, they're both on the West Highland Line and managed by Scotrail.

I feel if every answer is X has this and so does Y it gets a bit boring and people stop contributing. I enjoy the more spurious links. Also, show me a thread that has a number of posts that hasn't got tangental at some point. ;)

Thank you!!! ...I am sick of playing this game based on two towns lying on the same canal / Roman Road etc

Based on the comments made in recent postings, does the above posting ring a bell with anyone? So how do we resolve this problem? . Do we keep this quiz as it is, in the spirit that Mojo intended it and set up another quiz for people who want to play another type of quiz which will meet their own requirements. Perhaps that might be a better course of action, then everyone will be happy.

Until a solution is reached and as a somewhat happy medium, I will say.....

Sowerby Bridge and Bridge of Orchy both have a method of connection in their names.

It's so much more fun thinking up tenuous connections. Sowerby Bridge, unlike Bridge of Orchy, is not a bridge over the River Sowerby, since there isn't one. Another Bridge that doesn't have the name of the river in its name is, of course, London Bridge. :D

In regards to this little "disagreement", I have sent a PM to Paul. I have to say, I do agree with him. The more awkward and obscure ones are amusing but it does help to keep them at least remotely rail-related. I began dong otherwise previously and Paul pointed me in the direction of a request made previously about it, and since then I have tried to give all mine a rail aspect of some kind. Even my Pompey one had some degree of rail-related connection to it, given it related to an interchange...

Anyway, from London Bridge to, um, Portsmouth & Southsea (d'oh). Both stations have terminal platforms at a lower level to the through platforms.

Yarmouth Vauxhall, another station with a suffix (although not used now) which is an area of London served by a tube station.

I say a station and the person below would say another station that has something in common with it. It doesn't have to be unique, but try and make it as different as possible!

For example I might start with Cardiff Central, the next person would reply Kings Cross (both have a platform 0) and the person after could say Gatwick Airport (another Network Rail managed major station).

I thought that as a result of recent postings, I would post the above quote by Mojo, when he first set up this quiz, if this will help new members to this quiz.

I will make one final effort to enter into the newly-found spirit of the quiz and say......

Ford has a motoring connection in its name to Yarmouth Vauxhall.
