Although Stranraer is the closest railway station to the ferry port at Cairnryan, a Rail & Sail ticket will have you change at Ayr for the coach to the port.

Until the early 1990s, Ayr used to have a twice-daily (one daytime and one sleeping car train) Inter-City service to London Euston. This ran to and from Stranraer via Ayr and Barassie to the Glasgow South Western Line and then onto Carlisle and London.

After many years of the original station being unfit for purpose, the LSWR decided to rebuilt it. It was opened in stages between 1909 and 1922. The roof and platforms were initially designed by John Wykeham Jacomb-Hood MICE (1859 – 1914), firstly as the Chief Engineer and later as the Chief Resident Engineer of the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). In his tenure as Chief Engineer, Jacomb-Hood was responsible for the rebuilding of Clapham Junction.
