In the recent past, throughout the day there were services terminating at Knaresborough, as well as passing through. Currently most services pass through, with only a handful terminating. This is also true of Goole.

Goole station is mentioned in the 1963 song "Slow Train" by Flanders and Swann about various closed lines on the British railway network. However, several of the stations mentioned in the song did not actually close - including all the ones named in this extract:
"No one departs, no one arrives, from Selby to Goole, from St Erth to St Ives."

Ash Vale was also the scene of a fatal crime.

1952
Ash Vale station was the scene of one of the most violent robberies seen on the railways. Booking clerk Geoffrey Dean trusted his murderer, fellow railwayman John Alcott, and lost his life after a savage and unexpected attack.

1965
Fugitive John Middleton, who was hiding in the waiting room at Oxenholme shot Carlisle policeman Alex Archibald at the station. His colleague, George Russell, who was also shot, died a few hours later in hospital.

Bedford is another station which is served by trains which in a previous chapter of history plied their trade across the North of England (among others).

In common with other stations on the Marston Vale line, Bedford station is covered by the Marston Vale Community Rail Partnership. It aims to increase use of the Marston Vale line by getting local people involved with their local line. One such station is Aspley Guise.

Under current plans for East-West Rail it is planned to close the intermediate Marston Vale line stations and replace them with three new stations including a relocated Bedford St. Johns.

In the aftermath of the 2009 Cumbria floods, an additional hourly shuttle service operated southbound stopping at stations to Workington. All services between Workington, Workington North, Flimby and Maryport were free of charge until this service was terminated on 28th May 2010.

Bedlington is also a 2 platform station with all services provided by Northern.

Extra points for including the station on its opening day?

Bedlington is the newest operating UK rail station. The oldest is believed to be Broad Green
Heighington is officially recognised as the oldest operational station on the national network predating Broad Green by four years.
