In a northerly direction, the Merseyrail Northern Line splits after Sandhills into the Southport and Ormskirk branches. Hall Road is the seventh station on the former; Maghull North is the seventh station on the latter.
Kirkby Stephen is another station for which the three-letter-code contains a letter not in the name of the station (MNS for Maghull North; KSW for Kirkby Stephen*)
*KSW makes sense, as it was onceKirkby Stephen West, though I'm not sure if there's any story for the S of Maghull North's code).
Chester station was designed by the architect Francis Thompson (1808 – 1895) and opened as a joint station in 1848. Thompson became the architect for the North Midland Railway in 1839, and designed 13 stations for the NMR, including Belper, Eckington and Ambergate.
