Whereas Heysham Port station serves sea-going services, Dudley Port station emerged during the 19th century, due to the many warehouses and wharves being built along the Birmingham Canal.

East Grinstead was also originally on two levels but while it was the high level platforms that remained in use at Dudley Port it was the low level platforms at East Grinstead.

Alton used to be at one end of the long closed Meon Valley Line. Fareham was at the other end.
