Although Exeter St Thomas station was proposed for closure in Dr Beeching's The Reshaping of Britain's Railways report but remains open, it was not included in the song "Slow Train" by British duo Flanders and Swann. This was written in July 1963 and laments the closure of railway stations and lines brought about by the Beeching cuts in the 1960s, and also the passing of a way of life. One station that was also proposed for closure and is in the song and also remains open is Formby.
