Hightown is one of the quieter stations (8th least busy) on the Merseyrail electric network, to some extent caused by the station's relatively small catchment area.

The 9th least busy station served by Merseyrail - also with some degree of geographical isolation for commuter use - is Bidston.

From time to time, the local trains to Rose Hill Marple have been proposed for transfer to the Manchester Metrolink system.

Another line in Greater Manchester sometimes speculated for conversion to Metrolink is that via Atherton.

Despite being on the same line and having many trains per day which pass through both Westhoughton and Ince, on weekdays there is only one service per day in each direction which stops at both Westhoughton and Ince.

Another station with only one direct train per day to/from Ince is Manchester Oxford Road.

There is step-free access to both platforms at Adlington (Lancashire). However, there is no tactile paving on the northbound platform, and the southbound platform, for services towards Manchester can only be accessed by a steep ramp which is not suitable for wheelchairs. The nearest station with full tactile paving and full step-free access is Blackrod.

Truro railway station lies at one end of the Maritime Line, a Great Western Railway-operated branch that runs to the seaside terminus of Falmouth Docks.

Barton-on-Humber is another station which is a shadow of itself after considerable rationalisation and simplifying of track, buildings and facilities within the last few decades.
