Station Assistant Sacked

Folks,
Big spread in yesterdays Sunday Mail(scotland)A Scotrail employee with 37 years experience,3rd longest serving in the company,who manned the station,did all ticket checks,cleaned and looked after the station was sacked due to a breach of saftey regulations.

cut a long story short,the guy knew that no trains were due and he walked over the line to clean the other part of the station,cctv observes this and the poor old boy gets done.

This boy is well known and respected.Passengers have started a petition to get him reinstated,they have also handed over £700 to him for welfare purposes.Local MP for the area who is also a BTP Special Constable stated that it was a bit harsh re this outcome..............Rules are rules however seems a bit harsh

FirstGroup. Where everyone's up for gross misconduct for being 'unsafe'.

This from the company that got caught with it's trousers down trying to say that train despatch was not required at two major stations, so they could cut 34 jobs....

This from the company who left a station & subway locked up due to short staffing and the passengers were nearly flattened by a train whilst crossing the line....

FirstGroup: If it's not safe, don't do it!, (....unless it saves money)

With greatest respect to the guy if what the articles say are right then he was in the wrong. 'I know there arnt any trains due' isn't an excuse-you can never assume it is safe without talking to signaller first. Plus I don't think he would have PTS in that role and even with a full PTS I would never ever get in the track unless absolutely nessesary having first spoken to signal box. Perhaps sacking him is too harsh but I fail to see how he could have been so stupid as to walk on the tracks for a short cut?!
