Probably an OFF indication, doubt it'd be an RA due to trains being self dispatched there

Off indicators! They are going to be installed on all platforms as the new signals, especially on the Down, which are now on a gantry over the bridge are harder to see, and are classed as end of platform signals.

Does anyone know the lengths of all the Platforms once everything has been completed.

I would hope that the through platforms 1,3 & 4 could accommodate an 8x23m coach train such as a class 380 and the bays 6 x 23m.

I believe it was said earlier in this thread that the new platform 5 would be 140 metres. If so that would seem to be long enough for 6x23m. The modified bay platform 2 would seem to be longer than platform 5 on the latest NR diagram.

The Ordsall Chord was being designed to enable an 8 car class 380 to stand on it without interfering with running either end of it. That length of train was expected to be the longest likely to use it.

I think it unlikely in the short term that trains of that length will use the Chord or other routes but nonetheless on the same basis I would hope platforms at say Stalybridge and other stations taking longer distance TPE type trains can accommodate them if necessary.

According to an email update from Metro, the work is finished and it only cost £20 ...

Route now open!

The first trains have run through Stalybridge his morning, following the completion of Network Rail’s £20 investment in the station with construction of two new platforms, installation of new trackwork and signalling.

Train services now operate at the times shown in timetable booklets and on station posters dated Sunday 14 May 2012 until Saturday 8 December 2012 for the Caldervale Line timetable (pdf, 523k - opens in a new window) and Huddersfield Line timetable (pdf, 312k - opens in a new window). However due to a train fault the 0648 Marsden to Leeds service has started from Huddersfield this morning.

1 is 225m, 2 is 115m, 3 is 225m, 4 is 250m and 5 is 140m. That is off the signalling diagram.

Many thanks.

The diagram on the NR website would suggest that Platform 2 is as long as if not longer that Platform 5 but clearly not so.

That means that Platform 2 can only handle up to 4 car I believe.

But what services will be using the modified bay platform 2 ?

I have no idea what services will use platform 2. It will be accessible from both Piccadilly and Victoria directions.

At the moment only some Liverpool services use the bay and I imagine that will use Platform 5. However in the future and when the Hub and Electrification works have been completed more services are planned to use Stalybridge because of the capacity problems at Victoria. Therefore I would expect more terminating services.

I'm hoping that they may introduce a Piccadilly stopping service, possibly when the Ordsall Curve is completed and they are sending TPE services via Victoria.

Seems that only the through platforms 1,3 and 4 were in use early this morning. Nothing using the bays, although new bay 5 now appears to be handling Liverpool Lime Street turn backs.

Open train times seems to confirm this so far but nothing shown as using platform 5 as yet.

I do have a query. I understood platform3 was accessible from Victoria direction. Why therefore are the Liverpool trains terminating in platform 4 and departing from platform 3.

The only reason that I asked this was as a result of your previous comment about only 4-car services being able to access this bay platform.

Maybe it's just for the Denton Flyer :)

Although now I think about it, we do get the odd unit reverse here on its way to/from Newton Heath. I've even seen a 185 sat in (the old) Platform 3 bay.

New and shiny it was this morning, went through it on the empty stock to Huddersfield from Newton Heath this morning, a LOT of staff were on the renumbered Platform 4!

Worked the 1st stopper from Huddersfield back, many punters cheered us when we arrived haha!

Great to have OFF indicators for us Guards, makes it much easier to dispatch. Platform 1 still incomplete though, but i'm sure it will be done in due course!

Do you happen to know (out of interest), what was the first train to run through Stalybridge, yesterday morning?

Do we know if platforms 1,3 and 4 are all bi directional lines.

The Diagrams posted by NR only show Platform 3 as bi directional. Nevertheless earlier posting suggested that platform 1 might also be bi directional.

The signalling based on the excellent photos pasted by table 38 indicates that this might be the case or that in respect of platform 4 that it can be used as a terminator at least. Nevertheless unless there has been some change to the track layout then I can't see how platform 4 can be accessed from the east.

Open Train times are only showing platforms 1,3 and 4 in use. Does anyone know if this is the case or not.

Is there a PID on Platform 5 because I couldn't see one in the photos.

Will need to check, but only 3 springs to mind.

According to Open Train times two Eastbound trains use Platform 1 namely

1 An early train to Huddersfield which starts at Stalybridge and

2 A late night TPX

and therefore it looks like platform 1 is bi directional.

Nothing shown yet using 2 or 5.

Indeed 1 is bi-directional, it is possible to reverse back towards Ashton from 4 but nothing else.

It's this one, unless you meant (New) Platform 1 in whch case there's a support post but no PID yet.

(New) Platform 1 is not in use, they were still laying some of the edging stones today.

The PID in the photo is what I thought was the one for Platform 4 because I couldn't see another one in you photos other than the one under the canopy.

Your comments on platform 1 are noted. It was obvious from your photos that platform 1 wasn't finished, but open train times is show 1,3 & 4 in use. Clearly that must be wrong

Also many thanks for posting the photos which I fine most useful

Ah, I understand now. I am of the opinion that the (old) Platform 1 and 2 (new 3 and 4) PIDs weren't touched at all. The (new) Platform 5 PID is far enough down to avoid confusion (similar to the position of the old Platform 3 one was in).

However the new Platform 1, 2 and 3 PIDs are all quite close together and might benefit from one of those plates that tells you which platform they relate to, or maybe the (new) Platform 3 one could do with being moved a bit further east.

Ideally if people are expected to change trains at Stalybridge after the Northern Hub, we could do with one of those summary departure screens too, as the only one at the moment is down near the Ticket Office. (Perhaps they will put one in the Buffet Bar as well, which would be very useful!)

Based on the picture I took today, I reckon the P1 PID post is about where the roll of cable is)
