Thanks - presumably it's still used then, as there doesn't seem to be any other means of 'tail lamping' a train coming out of the section?

The new track and Platform layout is now available on NR website. Link below.

The design of the Ordsall Curve makes provision for an 8 Car train of 23m carriages. I believe it was said earlier that the new bay platform five is supposed to 140m. The existing but modified bay platform two would seem to be a bit longer. However will all three through platforms 1,3 and 4 be able to take 8 Car trains. I would hope so.

Thanks for the link. The new bay platform seemed well underway at the station, when I passed through on Saturday.

I think there maybe an error on the Diagram for the track and Platform Layout.

A train could depart from any platform (other than 4 which is eastbound only) to get to Victoria. However if the red arrow on the diagram on the line out to Victoria is correct (one way only) then surely no train could access platforms 2 or 3 from Victoria which can't be the intention or if it is then there would be no point to the first new section of track (red line ) on the lines to/from Victoria

Probably just a misplaced arrow - the sole purpose of the facing crossover you mention seems to be to get trains from Vic over to the lower numbered platforms. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a signalled move from platform 4 back towards the west - it's not unusual for such a facility to be provided on a line that's not otherwise bi-directionally signalled.

My previous posts explain what will happen at Stalybridge. They have missed a trick with the Ashton branch though as that is a slow speed turnout from the Guide Bridge line, especially if more and more traffic is planned to use it.

From the NR press release:
and the speed of trains passing through the station will increase from 40 to 50 mph

So 50mph only in the Guide Bridge direction, with 15mph remaining towards Victoria?
If so it seems to go against the RUS/Northern Hub objectives.

There is a missing arrow, you can get to the low numbered platforms from Victoria, I don't recall 4 being bi-di though, will need to check the plans.

so what exactly will the layout be? (Can't access the document). From my limited expertise it would seem the best option would be to introduce a west-facing bay on the north side of the station, reinstate the centre lines and then widen the southern platform to provide another platform face there. So you'd have one terminating bay for services from Victoria, one through platform for services from Victoria, and then two through platforms for trains from Piccadilly, while TPE services pass by on the centre lines.

Three through platforms, one (two?) bi-di; two west facing bays, one as now and one on the north side. No through roads but remodelled trackwork either side.

With the mention of the last week in October and the first week in November being allocated for works to be effected, where will the normal through services that terminate at Stalybridge be terminated ? Are there crossovers at Ashton under Lyne which would allow that to be the terminal station for those two weeks ?

Will the three through platforms be capable of holding an 8 car train made up of 23 meter carriages as provided for on the Ordsall Chord?

The new bay platform 5 is or was I believe 140 meters long or at least that was the intention based on previous posting. The revised bay platform 2 would seem to be longer but will either now be capable of holding an 8 car train made up of 23 meter carriages as opposed 6 cars

I think the plan is to run buses

Wow - this brings back memories. I used to get Peak Wayfarer tickets about 1984-1987? and the Trans-Pennines then were the old Generator 47s and Peaks (class 44,45,46). I would get an early morning train from Preston (loco hauled if at all possible) to Man Victoria. Then would travel back and forward between Victoria and Stalybridge with 45,46, 47 haulage. Then I would go to the pub on Platform (1??) where they had an excellent selection of real ales. Then the unit Stalybridge to Stockport - then class 86/87 into Picadilly -well you get the drift.

According to NR's powerpoint jobby, 4's not bi-di - is there a signalled move from there back towards the west though?

Looking at the plan, 4 is not bi-di, but as stated you can turn back from it. Platform 5, the new bay is 140m, P4 is 250m, P3 is 225m, P2 existing bay is 115m and P1 is 225m.

Many thanks.

However looking at the sketch plan platform 2 looks as though it will be longer than 5. Mind you it will depend on which side is intended to be used, platform 1 side or platform 3 side.

It is where the platform signal is placed that causes the length of P2 to be as it is.

From Manchester Victoria or from Ashton under Lyne ?

Below is an extract from a TfGM Committee meeting.

The precise details as to what will happen when the station is closed for nine days in October/November is not known yet but I suspect it will be replacement buses but from where I don't know

"Stalybridge Remodelling
Work to remodel the layout of Stalybridge will commence from 26 March 2012, with the
closure of the bay platform. Services which normally terminate and start at Stalybridge
will be amended until completion of the remodelling in work in November. Some
services will be re-timed, others will start from Manchester Victoria.
There will also be a series of Sunday closures, from 1 April to 24 June inclusive, and
from 16 September to 9 December inclusive. Northern Rail services between
Stalybridge and Manchester will be replaced by buses. Services operated by
Transpennine Express will be diverted via the Calder Valley route.
The work at Stalybridge will culminate in a blockade from Saturday 27 October until
Sunday 4 November inclusive, where a full service replacement plan will be in place.
Details of this will be provided in a future report to this Committee.
The remodelling at Stalybridge will provide a new through platform, and a new bay
platform for terminating services from Manchester Victoria."

First new services to take advantage have been agreed, in addition to the existing Dec timetable changes TfGM has got Dft to relinquish their 40% share of extra revenues from new or strengthened Northern services financed by TfGM until the end of the Northern Franchise in 2014. This will (in addition to making the existing funded Sunday services such as the Atherton line cheaper to subsidise) mean that 8 daily mon-fri Southport-Manchester Victoria and 7 daily Kirkby to Manchester Victoria services will now terminate at Stalybridge.

Northern forecasts this will lead to 86,000 more passengers a year while TfGM estimates it will take 25,700 cars off the road annually. This service alteration is based on work done for the Northern Hub which found a market for at least 300 passengers a day on direct Stalybridge-Salford/Bolton journeys for academic purposes.

Good to see this work going on. Was wondering why a Southport service wasn't departing from platform 3 the other day and instead Platform 2 so this explains it. No idea why are service from Victoria terminated on Platform 1 and headed towards Huddersfield though.

The Stalybridge Station Buffet is still going strong with an excellent range of real ales (and sandwiches).

On page 87 of the July 2012 issue of Modern Railways in the Trackwatch section, there is a quarter-page coloured diagram of the present and the proposed station and track layouts at Stalybridge, showing the both the existing and the new platform layouts and platform numberings.

As there was in a recent TRUK I think. I'm sure the online version is in one of the links posted earlier in the thread.
