1> What trains if any use the through line at Stalybridge Station behind the Manchester bound platform

2> What is the siding just behind Stalybridge Signal box used for on the line to Guide Bridge

I was on a train that terminated in there from Vic a few days ago. Also I'm guessing the Stockport shuttle?

That's the bay platform, used for the shuttle and terminating Northern services from Man Vic and Liverpool Lime Street. The siding is some sort of oil/petroleum/gas transfer point, often see a DB 66 and a rake of tankers there.

The pair of through lines (which the bay isn't!) are the goods lines - not sure how heavily they're used, but they'd be potentially available for putting a freight 'inside' to allow following trains to pass. I'd guess that they were originally provided in connection with the 'loop' line to Diggle, as I wouldn't imagine it'd be too easy in practice to get a Down freight inside (crossing the Up Main) and back out the other end (again crossing the Up Main).

The siding trailing off the Down Guide Bridge (note the change of direction!) line is marked in Quail as 'ATO Chemicals'.

That is quite correct. There were also 4 stations on this "loop" line to Diggle, all of which closed over 90 years ago:-

Staley and Millbrook (closed 1909)
Micklehurst (closed 1907)
Friezland (closed 1917)
Uppernill (closed 1917)

There's often an eastbound binliner "out of the way" in the goods loop with a 66 ticking away.

I was thinking about the ATO Chemicals siding the other day as I haven't seen any tanks in there for quite a while.

Stalybridge is a shadow of its former self, see map (or here for the 20MB hi-res version)

And this is a great site for history of the line

Really? The condition of the track looks dangerous.... Then again, I suppose a 5mph or 10mph PSR would suffice.

As are so, so many other stations :(.

its still regularly used just had a look at that map, its amazing what used to be there, alot of the areas are still visible, shame but hey thats progress for you *cough

just matched te map with google earth amazes me how it all fit lol

I've often thought it'd make sense to extend the Metrolink from Ashton-Under-Lyne to a new interchange at Stalybridge, either with a bit of mixed running over the existing line (as between Pelaw and Sunderland), or segregating running (as between Skelton and Navigation Road) into a new bay platform right outside the Buffet Bar :)

It's a pity the bus station in Stalybridge isn't adjacent to the railway station, so maybe even extend the trams down Market Street into the bus station!
</delusional>

However, I can't see it happening, and as I don't like trams, and as it's difficult enough to park at the station as it is, I'm not especially disappointed.

You see the odd TPE sat there at weekend evenings and have even seen an XC train on one occasion. What is interesting is that a substantial amount of land lies vacant the other side of the track, giving the station another two potential through platforms should the need ever arise.

Still receives two trains week (on Mondays and Thursdays) from Immingham:
arriving at 06:20 (6M33) and departing at 18:22 (6E72)

Normally a DB 66 these days, but 60024 worked it last Thursday!:)

It used to be a 60 everytime up until a couple of years ago. I remember it running past Ashton Moss North Jcn at speed on several occassions. But like you say it's a 66 these days...

Yep, the Rail, Bus and Tram stations will be next to eachother, and the Northern Hub (If Diggle 4 tracking goes ahead, or bays at stalybridge) is hinting that there may be up to 4tph calling at Ashton U Lyne. Very nice interchange if it did, all it would need is a nice signed pedestrian route between tram and train stations.
