The other big change locally was the split of the 102 (frankly something that needed to happen to improve reliability).

The corridor is now as follows:
102 - Folkestone Harbour to Lydd, hourly (3 vehicles)
103 - Folkestone Harbour to Lydd-on-Sea (The Pilot), hourly (3 vehicles)
104 - Dover to Hythe, half-hourly (via Folkestone Harbour)
105 - Dover to Folkestone, half-hourly (via Stanway Crescent, then loop via Folkestone Harbour and back out direct using Dover Road). The 104 and 105 appear to interwork and, as far as I can tell, work on a three-and-a-half-hour cycle (doing a 104 and return, then a 105 and return, and so on) - so should need seven vehicles but only five are tracking this morning).

Ashford now appears to work the 102/103 out of Old Romney, with 10706/08/10/14/16/19 transferred with the routes, but two of them are out on the 2A and 10 instead! Dover has retained the 104/105. Dover is also now working the 71/71A Cheriton services with a mix of 'deckers and Enviro 200s (the routes are no longer being interworked with other services).

The split preserves the core frequencies introduced last year (so x15min Folkestone - Dover, x15min Folkestone - Hythe, and x30min Hythe - New Romney). Improvements include the terminating of the 102/103 at Marine Parade, by Folkestone Harbour, and serving Folkestone Central Station on all 102/103/104 workings - but also, a Sunday evening service until 2200 from Folkestone down to New Romney, which is a big surprise (it used to finish by about 1930).

The other side-effect of these changes is a frequent link from Folkestone Central to the Harbour - which presumably will mean that the wildly successful 51 service operated by Crosskeys last summer (it carried well over 10,000 passengers in just seven weeks) will no longer be needed. I wonder if Stagecoach saw that as a potential competitive threat?

Caught the 21.02 103 from Folkestone Central to New Romney, Light Railway Stn on Sunday evening. Two of us boarded there & in total 12 passengers were carried on the journey. A modest start but hopefully patronage will improve as more people become aware of the later Sunday buses.

North Whitfield is now served by a shuttle service (route 67), funded from the Dover Fastrack pot:

25 Nov 2024

Recognising the impact caused by the changes to commercial bus services in Dover, Kent County Council (KCC) is funding a shuttle service which connects North Whitfield to Dover Fastrack and the Buckland Hospital.

The new 67 shuttle service, funded using the overall budget for Dover Fastrack, is set to launch on Monday 25th November and will be in place for an initial period of up to 12 months, subject to usage.

Passengers will be able to connect at Tesco for Dover Fastrack and will not be charged an additional fare to Dover. This will be the same for when returning from Dover.

The Dover Fastrack service was designed to help stimulate new housing growth in Whitfield and at the former Connaught Barracks site. Once the developments start to take effect, a further review of the local bus network will be undertaken.

The service will be operated by Stagecoach and its use will be monitored on a quarterly basis.

Neil Baker, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “I am pleased we have been able to find a solution to the concerns expressed by residents about changes to bus services in the Dover area recently. We have worked collaboratively with our partners in order to provide passengers with a reliable bus service. While we cannot solve all problems, I hope this announcement shows we do try and react quickly when issues arise.”

Joel Mitchell, Managing Director, Stagecoach South East, added: “With costs continuing to increase, and passenger numbers not growing quickly enough to keep up with the costs, it’s critical that funding is made available to support those services that don’t carry enough people to cover their operating costs. That’s why we’re so pleased that KCC have been able to secure this funding so that we can keep doing what we’re here to do - serving the community. We’re here to run buses and where passenger numbers don’t allow for that to happen commercially, we need funding to bridge that gap. We’re delighted that KCC have been able to do that.”

This also restores a direct link from Buckland/St Radigunds/River to Whitfield. Ideally it would be extended further south from Buckland Hospital to Dover town centre (a journey of just under 10 mins). As the 67 mirrors the now hourly 64 from River to Buckland, this would give that section a more frequent service. Up until relatively recently, this area had 3 buses an hour to Dover town centre, now it’s hourly.
However, this would of course mean the 67 would need more than one bus and driver to stay hourly, or have an odd frequency such as every 90 mins.
Ending on a positive though, it’s good they can provide funding for one bus every hour to fill the gap for now. It’s seems this service was planned and implemented in a very short space of time, so well done those who helped to get it sorted.

I can't help but think they keep making a huge mess of things with Dover's local routes.

The cancelled (in 2017) Route 60/60A made sense as a route at the time, this linked the Town Centre via the Hospital and River and then up to B&Q in Whitfield.

The 61 that got truncated by cutting out North Whitfield and instead going to Menzies Rd/bus garage should be restored to North Whitfield.

These changes would make the 67 unnecessary, and remove some duplication that this is all causing. Like what use is the River/Whitfield 67 going past at 05 minutes past and then the River bound 64 following it right behind.

The routing doesn't make a huge amount of sense right now on some of the local routes, they have changed these to serve the Market Square first, when heading into town, then loop round to Pencester Road before heading back out to their respective destinations. I believe this is to currently have them link with Fast Track at the Market Square stop but wasn't this supposed to be going via Pencester Road (Whitfield bound) once the contraflow is finished?

I used the new 67 route twice yesterday, it seems rather lightly used, but for myself it will provide a useful link to Whitfield when I need to go there. However, I get the feeling that it's not going to last for various reasons. Unfortunately the drivers also didn't seem to be enthused about having to drive it and I can't really blame them, given they have dragged out a seemingly unreliable 20yr old bus to do it.

It is also hard to understand why the 65 was created for Aycliffe on a half hourly schedule when that leg of the 64 always seemed far more lightly used than the bit between Town Centre and River which is now hourly. Though, perhaps why they have done it, is it saves on one bus, the original 64 had three to keep up the half hourly schedule, now the 64 and 65 have one allocated on each, the Aycliffe leg being much shorter than the River leg allows them to keep it to half hourly, while the one out to River and back takes almost an hour.

I think the best option here would be for KCC to provide some part funding to restore the 64 to as it were up until the Nov change (Aycliffe - River) rather than funding for the 67, sure that's no direct link to Whitfield for St Radigund's and River, but it would still directly link with fast track in the town. Or is it not possible for a bus route to be run on split commercial and public funding and instead it's an either/or?

Hot on the continued repaints into Local, South does it again with it's own version - Winchester Park & Ride E200 MMCs seem to be gaining an updated version of the smart two tone green livery but in Local style. Another smart version which would probably do quite well across the group I feel!

I know this one has been off the road for a while now following accident damage, so it'll be interesting to see if the others follow suit in the short term, or if this was just done in new livery style rather than the previous swoops-derived style but will still have the same Park & Ride and King Alfred head graphics applied to this variant.

Two tridents now removed from the fleet according to Bus Times (18514 / GX06DXM & 19077 / MX56FTP), so I wonder how long it'll be before their replacements come in from elsewhere.

Stagecoach’s Guildford depot will not be running the RHS Wisley to Woking shuttle bus from the New Year, returning to the ‘Woking Bustler’ dial-a-ride firm. However, going by comments on an enthusiasts’ Facebook page, one senior member did mention that the need for a larger vehicle from Stagecoach would be purely seasonal, so watch this space come April…

Like most if not all Tridents across the country, replacements will be coming in January when Bee Network Tranche 3 launches and Manchester have a huge amount of E400s to cascade elsewhere.

A prominent manager at Guildford depot has made an announcement through the depot’s enthusiast Facebook Group that 22 Enviro400 Tridents and 5 E400MMCs are coming down on Sunday, replacing some of the remaining 18xxx ALX400 Tridents. At least Guildford is definitely confirmed to be completely replaced with 18516/18517 maybe staying for a bit longer.

Guessing they are from Manchester. Looks like its the end of the ALX 400's reign here then!

Presumably Andover will receive another MMC soon, as 10778 is still working on the Activ 8 / 76 despite the two arriving from Oxford releasing Gold branded 10778 back to Aldershot.

Andover are receiving 3 of the E400MMCs, on another group a few days back someone suggested the other 2 were headed for Chichester although not entirely sure why. Andover also has 3 tridents so i'm assuming at least 2 of those will be going.

Back in the late 1980s the privatised Alder Valley ran Olympians on what was then the 107 on Sundays as an extension of the route from Guildford (which itself may have had a different number at that time - 263 springs to mind, though memory may be playing tricks on me there).

Guildford to Horsham was 283.
(FWIW Ewhurst was 273, while the 263 was Guildford to one of the Cranleigh estates, the three combining to give a 20-min frequency. Later on ISTR the 263 was also extended to Ewhurst).

In 1984/5 (late NBC days) the route numbering between Guildford and Cranleigh was very complex: you had the 273 and 283 as the simplest services, each running hourly (Ewhurst and Horsham) but then you had the 269, 289, 293, 295 and 297 all of which made various diversions and took various routes along the way and which provided the third bus per hour.

The simpler 263/273/283 pattern came in, IIRC, not at deregulation but in mid-April 1985 as part of a Guildford-area reorganisation which also saw the G1-G13 town services introduced on a consistent numbering scheme. If I remember right Tillingbourne took over some of the more esoteric services at that time.

Do we have any idea of the vehicles due for South soon from Manchester? 27 Enviros won’t replace all of the 53 Tridents & Trident 2s unless we receive further vehicles from places like Oxfordshire.

Also noted today; Portsmouth based 200MMC SN67WWK is now working out of Aldershot and on the 1, while in return Aldershot based 400MMC SN66VYY has swapped places and is working out of Portsmouth on the 23s.

More doubles than usual on the 23 because First Hoeford depot was on strike, apparently.

Re the cascades from Manchester, I suspect we must wait and see what arrives. May simply be down to which buses are fit to travel. I believe 5 16 plate MMCs are expected; the rest should be 08 plate deckers. Various deployments have been suggested but I don't have confidence enough to post them.

Just hope these are in better nick than the last cascades from Manchester (190xx)......

Indeed a few fleet movements have taken place due to the strike action being held by First’s Hoeford depot over the rest of the month. Some within the Pompey depot have moved to Chichester (26164, 27655, 27869, 11272/3, 19078) while Aldershot’s Gold 10768/77 are at Portsmouth in exchange for 26165 and 27878.

It’s been updated that the cascades is unlikely to go to Guildford immediately as it seems. One note of interest allegedly 19335 (the new black dark blue liveried E400) is also coming down to one of the South depots.

Stagecoach SE will be in reciept of 32 vehicles this coming weekend from Manchester - one would assume this will finish off any ALX400s left

If some of the ALX400s were still based at Thanet, I’d go on a hunt for a final ride tomorrow, but they are all based in East Sussex - 5 in Hastings and 1 at Eastbourne.
There are also the two ex-London open-top examples used for the coastal 69 summer service. It is unclear if they will return to service for the 2025 season.

06/56 reg E400s out of Thanet are also worth doing as they are Euro 3 Tridents underneath so same as Stagecoach spec ALX400s and likely won't have long left either based on the amount of buses due from Manchester from the above post.

At least five new Optare Solo SRs have arrived a few days ago at Aldershot depot and are/to be numbered:
48202: YJ74CXV
48203: YJ74CXW
48204: YJ74CXX
48205: YJ74CXY
48206: YJ74CXZ

I've also checked bustimes.org today and much of the ex Manchester deckers have been updated on the South fleet list. These are 19327/28, 19333-35, 19337-46, 19348, 19350/51 and they are to be based at Andover, Aldershot and Guildford depots for the time being.

I can confirm 19335 has gone south - It is currently parked in Basingstoke depot this afternoon along with 334 and approx 7/8 other E400s.

Not entirely Stagecoach related but I’ve spotted these new bus stops near the nearly-complete Ash Bridge Road at the new build housing estate made for the Aldershot-Guildford 20 route once the level crossing closes sometime early in 2025. The northbound has a shelter and dot matrix next bus display while the southbound is a simple bus stop.

However it seems someone at Surrey County Council made a mistake on the bus stop flags themselves, for the 520 mentioned has been withdrawn back in September!

Anyone on the hunt for original Enviro400s with Trident chassis, or Dennis Dart SLFs, Thanet’s route 34 is a good route to find them on. Not exactly a scenic route going through various estates, and lots of roads with traffic calming which is clearly not designed with buses in mind. But still quite an interesting route. I can’t imagine those types will be around much longer, especially with recent deliveries from Manchester.

The 32 and 45 also tend to have the types running currently. Darts also commonly found on the 11 and 48.

A lot of Tridents running around Hampshire and Surrey over the last few days (including the 1 in Aldershot). It almost feels like a mini running event around here. Meanwhile, both Aldershot, Winchester and Basingstoke depot's have a considerable number waiting for entry into traffic - I note though, as per usual, the nicer new MMCs have all migrated to Chichester.
