The new Plaxton Interdeck's that Strathtay have for the launch of the extended X7 are looking very swanky indeed.

Although I have no idea how they will be able to get round the turning circle at PRI...The old E300's managed to just get round it by a whisker...

Aberhill depot is a DVSA approved testing facility, so various operators vehicles can appear for testing on test day, which I think is a Friday.
There is no such facility at Glenrothes depot.

It's not testing, it's just prep for testing. I'm told Arriva vehicles in the GM area visit a Stagecoach depot for prep as well.

I can assure you that Stagecoach in Fife don't do any MoT prep for any other operators. The occasional charity bus perhaps, but definitely no commercial operators.

Well I'm going by what a driver told me. But obviously, if someone else knows better, then that's kool.

Speaking on the topic of depots and MOT's, would I be right in saying that under legislation, depots cannot MOT their own vehicles? If so, where would Aberhill send their vehicles?

Did a driver tell you that too???
DVSA (or VOSA as they used to be called) test vehicles, not the operators.
It's no different to presenting any other vehicle for annual test. You can do the prep yourself, pay someone else to do it, or whatever you like, ....but it won't make any difference to how the DVSA examiner carries out the test!

It does look like Stagecoach will not be replacing the 651 in any shape of form; I’m not even sure where that talk even comes from. You can’t blame them not wishing to try, but to be fair the route has been badly mismanaged by everyone over the past 15 years, even by the councils. The only route to work has been the weekend No51.

Claims continue to be made there is no demand, which is utter hogwash, it’s just no one want to put in a bit of effort to grab the passengers, which granted won’t be easy.
It also hasn’t helped that the three council which cover the route haven’t had any joined up thinking, and seem hell bent over this issue, which is strange since there all member of Setran. All the reports about the traffic usage over the bridge continue to highlight said corridor, having one of the HIGHEST % of traffic, which of course is one of the only route to have virtually no public transport links, mind you it neglects to look at traffic going the other way, ie people commutating into fife.

Why has the 651 fail? Because it took far too long for its end to end journey time: 80mins, it’s faster going to Glasgow, it drove a lot of people away. Mind you the faster No51 often busy. 651 provided no journeys for workers. Even back in when first operated it and when the council provide a peak service, it was outside the time for many people work times. Of course First had no cash to expand.
It’s resulted in a toxic mix, and mismanagements, where companies and council don’t want to try and provide a proper service because it looks from the outset it been tried and failed but it’s NEVER been tried properly, and it’s very unlikely it will change any time soon.

Strangely Stagecoach are happy to continue to operate the X52 which runs empty 99% of the time.

I think the way the 651 was marketed hasn't helped. Well, what I mean by that is that here in Fife, I'm not aware of much publicity for the service. There used to be a predecessor service, mentioned above, the X90, also run initially by First. The end to end journey time was 50 minutes.

If Stagecoach were to try and replace the 651, then Stagecoach could, and I stress COULD be more successful, for these reasons.

1 - The service would also pick up the Dunfermline area traffic, thus making travelling from Rosyth into Dunfermline possible on it, either by paying a fare or megariders.

2 - connections at Ferrytoll P&R would be more straightforward, as people would be changing from a Stagecoach bus to a Stagecoach bus.

But, as I say, Stagecoach could be more successful. No guarantees about it.

But, as I say, Stagecoach could be more successful. No guarantees about it.

Lets be honest here, First's "exact fare" policy did it no favours. Nearly all the drivers had no idea about day or weekly tickets or even knew fife was in Zone E. Yet they were told repeatedly about this information.

The route ended up being operated by coaches a lot of time, due to the fact Livingston was short of buses. I've noticed a number times buses were running late for no apparent reason. Some of the drivers also left Livingston late because they would not pull into the stands until departure time, Then waste 5 mins loading up.

Trying to get timetables or fare information was not easy. The current Return fare was £7.20; nearly £1.50 more than Stagecoach: £5.70

The weekly ticket for the route was £28.60. If you were a Fifer that meant you would have to shell out even more for travel around Fife. Who could afford that plus more? (again that's only if you could get one out of a drive, actually many of the drivers also never knew South Queensferry was in Zone L, so again passengers lost out)

I have to agree with you, If stagecoach operated the fast service and diverted via the Sky and business parks etc it should get a lot of customers with its own Megarider tickets, and people could change over a lot easier.

I remember Horseburgh running the X90, they helped destroy the route just like everything else it touches (remember 555/777?). Mind you, First lost a trick also not running into Fife earlier from the west Lothian area, I bet plenty work around Sky call centre in fife.

If Stagecoach expanded the 51, it would need to put a bit of elbow grease into the route, and also inform commuters, but it's all dreams now!

Tricky route to get right.

Three councils (as previously mentioned), no obvious "peak" (compared to Dunfermline - Edinburgh or Livingston - Edinburgh), quite a lot of dead running involved for quieter journeys.

Do you serve South Queensferry (at quite a time penalty) or go direct (which means not picking anyone up between Ferrytoll and Livingston)? As overthewater says, it's a slow enough service - would a "leisure" passenger spend over an hour on a 51/651 to get to Dunfermline/Livingston (when they could be in Edinburgh/Glasgow etc in the same time)?

It's probably never going to be frequent enough to co-ordinate with other routes (Dunfermline - Ferrytoll / Pumpherston - Livingston) - i.e. a half hourly service could be co-ordinated with the 55 or the 21 or whatever, but a bi-hourly service probably can't be used to tie in with any other service.

You're going to get stuck in the "Edinburgh" traffic at rush hour but without the benefit of actually serving Edinburgh.

Basically, I think it'd only work for Stagecoach *IF* they had significant other operations in West Lothian, which they clearly don't, so I can't see anything happening.

To be fair No51 end to end time is 45-50mins, it has far to much running time.

It does have an obvious peak traffic, between the two locations, but you have to watch the cars as their say.

Stagecoach do pick up passengers inbetween the Ferrytoll and Livingston IE Kirkliston, Of course Stagecoach Fife don't pick up between Cumbernauld - Glasgow, and its suits those runs fine. The trick, which the weekend No51 does well, is to make sure the bus is nearly full leaving the Ferrytoll.

Another interesting point is the parking, you have to pay for it now,

* Up to 3 hours £2.50
* Up to 4 hours £3.00
* Up to 5 hours £4.50
* Up to 6 hours £7.00
* Up to 7 hours £8.00
* Up to 8 hours £9.00

Take in the cost of the fuel and it works out the same, and if you work in the the shopping centre, its already cheaper by bus!

Only used the 651 once, from Ferrytoll to Winchburgh and it was very busy, especially from South Queensferry, most people seemed to be going to Livingston. Usually a few people getting off whenever I seen it coming into Dunfermline Bus Station too.

Don't E.M. Horsburgh run between SQ and Livingston?

Yes, Horsburgh does operate under a council contract between SQ and Livingston, but it only operates between 6am - 9am and 17.30 - 21.30. On a Saturdays the 651 can be very busy heading into Fife.

Other problems which did not help the 651, were the buses used. Some of the buses were pretty dire. You could be sitting and your feet start moving one way and your body moves another way, the chassis were in a poor state. If you were lucky to get a newer bus you had the delights of Urban 90 seats, sore bums after 80mins.

The fuel bill must have been a killer as well, especially when the coaches were used. I wonder if the new streetlites were used on the route would it have helped cuts its costs? First had nothing else to operate the route, even darts would have helped but none ever appeared over the past year.

Against all that the route never really carried fresh air and always had passengers on the buses. ( well except for the last bus at night ;) )

I think I'm reading this right.

50, X52 and Edinburgh-Dalgety Bay stuff all canned.

X54 becomes Edinburgh-Ferrytoll-Halbeath-Cowdenbeath-Glenrothes-Ladybank-Dundee. Morning service via Fife College becomes X30.

X61 extended to Thornton. (Why?)

X8 becomes an extension of the X58, the X60 still going via Anstruther. Suppose that puts to bed new bus speculation for the time being.

Wonder what X94 is?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Also, is the X24 variation extra services between Dunfermline and Glenrothes to maintain a half hourly service?

I believe the Edinburgh-Dalgety Bay stuff has not been canned. Some suggestions included them being merged into the X58/X60. X94 would be the current dead runs.

It does seem stuff has yet to appear.

Service X54 will no longer operate, it seems via Dunfermline. Instead replace the extra X59's. Service X24 will only gain two extra afternoon peak runs.

Big questions have to be;
* What is the deal with the X61,
* What will replace the peak journeys on the X54 and service X57.

Also note the X60 between Leven and St.Andrews will be limited stop. This part of the route is currently all stops.

Former East Scotland 33434, the original Goldline spare from Perth, has been withdrawn for disposal by Stagecoach East Midlands (Lincoln depot) - reportedly due to the compressor becoming unserviceable. It's one of a significant number of older Darts withdrawn following the arrival of new Enviro200s at Grimsby.
