Can someone tell me what on earth is the deal with 37403 and 37424 swapping names?!
In 1986 37403 was named Isle of Mull and in 1988 37424 was named Glendarroch. Then in that same year 37424's Glendarroch name was removed, 37403's Isle of Mull name was removed and she was renamed Glendarroch. Then in 1990 37424 was named Isle of Mull.
THEN in 1994 37424's Isle of Mull name was removed and 37403's Glendarroch name was removed. It wasn't until 2016 that 403 received the name Isle of Mull again. In that same year 37424 was renamed to Glen- oh wait, sorry. It's uhhh... Avro Vulcan XH558. A typical Tractor name.

There was a suggestion at the time that the nameplate swap was linked to the owning sector of the locos. 37403 was initially a Provincial/Regional Railways sector loco whereas 37424 was an InterCity sector loco.
37403 getting the "Isle of Mull" name back in 2016 was after it was preserved, IIRC, which returned it to pretty much 1988 condition: large logo blue livery, Eastfield's West Highland terrier and "Isle of Mull" name. Photo below at Norwich in 2017.

Interesting about the sectors thing, thanks. I'm a little ashamed to admit I thought 403's first return to working order was the more recent 2021 refurbishment but I now know it was 2016, thanks!

Not to toot my own trumpet lol, but 37261 is owned by the Scottish 37 Group instead of the SRPS and there was some light chatter about her restoration on the B&KR thread of mine here https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/boness-and-kinneil-railway.306113/

Undoubtedly a big job and I wouldn't try to lighten it. But I had always wondered whether buying s relatively "empty" loco might be a viewed as a bonus. You have to refurbish the machines inside anyway so is it easier to repair the structure and frames the rewire and replumb the systems then add the exhausters. compressors, blowers etc to the shell.
Huge respect to you guys who do this

Heard that 025 failed on Sunday and was unable to take part in the quadruple header at Steam, Steel, Road and Rail. Does anyone have any info on this? I see it’s still heading to the KWVR

Videos of the gala show 025 conspicuously absent from the “quadruple header” which is a triple header formed of the three kettles instead. Not sure what happened or when but it is on the way to Keighley now
