Going on the logic of 'cabs' I would imagine you could have 10 MS vehicles between the DMS vehicles of a 158 giving a 12 coach train. The original BR working instructions book for the 158 mentions units being formed DMS-MS-MS-DMS but I don't think formations like that were common. If I come across my 158 centre car brief I'll see if it mentions the restrictions on multiple working.

A world where there were a number of 4 coach 158 units for regional routes would have been really nice. Maybe even with a small buffet counter?

More often than not the 170, though I've always noticed that a lot of passengers are more concerned with which one doesn't contain the guard.

When pairs of 170s where commonplace in Anglia/NXEA days the guard would often swap units en-route. On a Lowestoft Air-Show special, I've even stopped out of course at Haddiscoe (no signaller here) to allow him to jump cab-cab

1Z32 was 150926+153325+150305.

I saw a 150-158/9-150-158/9 formation in the morning.

Presumably that is so a siggie doesn't wonder what is going on?

When the 158s first appeared, they ran a staff special formed of 6x 2car 158s.
There was a photo of it in RAIL magazine, somewhere on the Hope Valley route IIRC.

Think I already know the answer to this, but could further centre cars be constructed now? It would save on doubling up, releasing other units to work elsewhere.

So many kinds of no.

Only chance you'd have is converting Mk3 or Mk4 trailing carriages to sit as un-powered centre cars.

But then it would be waayyy too slow.

When I was doing the Shrewsbury - Wolverhampton line a few weeks ago, there was a member of staff in both units when pairs of LM 170s tipped up, although the member of staff in the front unit was for revenue only.

Not sure if the same happens when pairs of 170s work out towards Hereford.

During the Ipswich tunnel blockade I was in a doubled 170 (non stop via Cambridge) with the buffet closed and no sign of the guard - assume they were in the other unit and that buffet was open. Irritating for me as I wanted a drink but meh.

Technically true, but they have been known to go up to Glasgow for works attention

A bit like turning up at Camden from the north with a Crab in steam days.

On booking back on after rest, the Crab would be waiting for you to "take the bloody thing back".

1730 Weymouth to Bristol Temple Meads tonight, worked by 153373/361/305/329/369 in multiple. Grand total of 5 Dogboxes.

Apologies. False alarm. Appeared as such on picture but was just 305/329/369. Was in behind 2C89 1900 Cardiff to Taunton slightly late.

Not sure if it would be allowed to run in normal service, but BR ScotRail tried a 12 car 156 as a test.

6x2 158s was tried too as part of the acceptance criteria in the contract. I seem to remember it passing through Cardiff.

When the 158s first appeared, they ran a staff special formed of 6x 2car 158s.

It may have been the same trip. Not sure about Provincial but NSE were always good at giving the staff a jolly on proving runs. I met Pete Waterman on one once.

2E95 1900 Penzance to Exeter StDavids formation tonight forward from Plymouth:-

153368,153370, 153372,153373, 153377

Was 1 only from Penzance and attached 4 at Plymouth, 2 had worked 1750 Penzance to Plymouth as booked. The other 2 were not associated with a Diagram, so presumably dumped at Plymouth and finding their way home.

I know it's only ECS, but 5K24 Shrewsbury Abbey Foregate - Crewe LNWR last night was 158830,158825,150241,150231,153327.

Has there ever been any 12 coach class 165 / 166 / 168 / 170 / 171 / 172 formations (eg 170 + 170 + 170 + 170 + 170 + 170) either in public service or on test runs?

The longest that i can think of is the 10 coach class 171s on the London Bridge to Uckfield line (as far as i am aware Southern dont ever run 12 coach 171s)?

It would be good to see more 12 coach DMUs in service.

This thread started talking about Sprinter formations but now you're introducing Turbos and Turbostars to the discussion and generalising about DMUs. In which case I remind you that Virgin's "blockade-busters" via the Chiltern line (mostly) ran as 3x221 = 15 cars. Long enough for you?!;)

Interesting. Those 15 coach 221s must have had to use SDO at every station they called at. I always thought that the maximum formations allowed is 12 coaches

Back on the subject of Sprinters what is the most amount of classes that have been coupled together? For example has there ever been a 150 + 155 + 156 + 158 formation?

Problem with that is that nearly all later DMU classes are 23m vehicles, and are outside the usual platform lengths, there aren't many platforms in the Southeast designed for anything longer than 12 car EMUs.

Both Southern and SWT will logically consider the 10 car DMUs that they can already run as being maximum length for their current infrastructure, especially the respective terminal platforms at Waterloo and London Bridge.

IIRC they ran nonstop from Coventry to Euston so no issues with platform lengths. Pretty sure 221's don't have SDO anyway.
