The 3rd one down is a 10 car not 8, single 153 is classed as 2 car as it had 2 cabs
The first two add up to 6 and 7 respectively.
Going on the logic of 'cabs' I would imagine you could have 10 MS vehicles between the DMS vehicles of a 158 giving a 12 coach train. The original BR working instructions book for the 158 mentions units being formed DMS-MS-MS-DMS but I don't think formations like that were common. If I come across my 158 centre car brief I'll see if it mentions the restrictions on multiple working.
More often than not the 170, though I've always noticed that a lot of passengers are more concerned with which one doesn't contain the guard.
Rugby at Cardiff today brought out:-
1Z50 10 44 Bristol TM to Cardiff - 2x150/2 + 2x150/9
5Z30 16+45 Bristol TM to Cardiff = 2x153 + 150/9 + 150/1 to work
1Z32 18 00 Cardiff Cen to Bristol TM
When pairs of 170s where commonplace in Anglia/NXEA days the guard would often swap units en-route. On a Lowestoft Air-Show special, I've even stopped out of course at Haddiscoe (no signaller here) to allow him to jump cab-cab![]()

A world where there were a number of 4 coach 158 units for regional routes would have been really nice. Maybe even with a small buffet counter?
Think I already know the answer to this, but could further centre cars be constructed now? It would save on doubling up, releasing other units to work elsewhere.

Technically true, but they have been known to go up to Glasgow for works attention
Not sure if it would be allowed to run in normal service, but BR ScotRail tried a 12 car 156 as a test.
When the 158s first appeared, they ran a staff special formed of 6x 2car 158s.
Has there ever been any 12 coach class 165 / 166 / 168 / 170 / 171 / 172 formations (eg 170 + 170 + 170 + 170 + 170 + 170) either in public service or on test runs?
The longest that i can think of is the 10 coach class 171s on the London Bridge to Uckfield line (as far as i am aware Southern dont ever run 12 coach 171s)?
It would be good to see more 12 coach DMUs in service.
This thread started talking about Sprinter formations but now you're introducing Turbos and Turbostars to the discussion and generalising about DMUs. In which case I remind you that Virgin's "blockade-busters" via the Chiltern line (mostly) ran as 3x221 = 15 cars. Long enough for you?!![]()

Interesting. Those 15 coach 221s must have had to use SDO at every station they called at. I always thought that the maximum formations allowed is 12 coaches
Back on the subject of Sprinters what is the most amount of classes that have been coupled together? For example has there ever been a 150 + 155 + 156 + 158 formation?
