Don’t be ridiculous. The OP has received a refund, which I had stated was due. My comment was about the words being used and not the outcome.
I was actually talking about the scenario where the railway returns some pittance when the return journey was cancelled. I absolutely agree that there is no cause for action here

I think we can all agree that, in general, litigation against a train company is much, much, more likely to get you what you actually want than a lengthy process of backwards and forwards attempting to get them to accept being wrong voluntarily.
Sadly so. With some companies it seems that is the only thing that attracts serious attention.

My advice is where possible to make the journey, incur the delay, and claim compensation. The entitlement to compensation is then clear-cut.

If anyone chooses not to use one half of a return ticket, the problem becomes more problematical; the amount due (compensation or refund) can dramatically reduce, and the amount of effort required to get it can dramatically increase.

That seems sensible.

As I stated in another thread, I split my East Didsbury - Liverpool ticket in Manchester 2 weeks ago. Likewise, later this month I'm due to travel from Heaton Chapel or Stockport to the West Midlands for the day and shall split my ticket at Stafford in order to qualify for Off-peak Day Returns that combine to be cheaper than an Off Peak Return. In the former case my trains were direct, and in the latter case they will be direct or an advertised connection.

Anyway, now I know that these examples qualify for Delay Repay for the full combination if applicable.
