Following on from my Unusual Life Ambitions thread:

There are some things that are often thought of as things that many people will want to gain from life. A few examples of such things would be fame, fortune and (less often) fantasy.

If there was one specific thing you wanted from life, or indeed if there really is, what would it be? For me personally, it would be knowledge.

Feel free to provide several suggestions in replying, but try to give a definite answer as well. I would also have provided a poll, but I would invariably forget about 101 different things!

Anyway, what do the rest of you think?

I would like to have enough money to properly test the old adage that money cannot buy happiness

It would probably have to be; to have a well paid (and enjoyable) job where I make enough money so that I am comfortable, no need to worry about bills or unexpected things and easily be able to save for something nice. But don't want too much of the stuff.

To actually influence people in terms of sustainable living as most people couldn't give a s*** when it's actually one of the most serious problems facing mankind.

An entirely secular world (with the bonus of being an important precursor to world peace) and a world where religious beliefs are subject to the same scrutiny and questioning as everything else

Is this sustainable living do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX83I6jCVc0

More sustainable than all those people taking a car. And its not jut about that, food production? what do we do when phosphorus runs out? Water? What the hell happens when 12 billion people want to live like americans... etc etc.

But in short no it probably isnt, but in the bigger picture that makes little difference.

Wrong attitude.

Not really, to me one little train isnt the problem it is societal change. Its about seeing the practicalities of what we are trying to achieve.

Getting rid of all old rail locos to be replaced by new ones is not sustainable due to the energy required to build a new loco, its better to let the existing ones get life expired before replacing them so overall C02 emissions are lower even though the less fuel efficient more polluting engine is left out for longer.

The boom of car building with more environmentally friendly engines achieved little due to the construction costs (energy wise therefore c02 wise). It would of been better to let current cars become life expired then replace gradually. This then also would help with all the factories that were set up and now demand is gone have ceased production, again c02 used when it didn't need to.

Sorry i don't see how my attitude is wrong.

Learn how to play either Hotel California, Stairway to Heaven or Layla on guitar.

If not, just get the best job I can and enjoy life!

It's a small part of a bigger problem, which is made up of lots of little small parts, if you don't bother to change one little thing, why should anyone else bother to change any of the others?
If it's just one little train, then why shouldn't I just run one little car, then why can't my friend just run one little car too, it's only adding an insignifican't amount to what's being used overall. And I don't see why I can't have just one little train running too, and so on and so forth.

Sorry i don't see how my attitude is wrong.

You're only looking at the bigger picture, whereas you have to look at both the details and the bigger picture overall - yes it requires everyone to cut down overall, but to get to that point, everyone has to cut down - if everyone takes the 'oh, it's just one little thing' line, then nothing happens.
Some people just focus on the little things whilst others just focus on the overall, it works both ways, but you cannot have the right attitude towards changing things unless you focus on both.

90019 Right well it wasn't an entirely serious answer to a lets face it jokey question.

I understand where you are coming from and i agree so im not going to argue. I didn't really get chance to show that in any of my responses.

From your responses i take it you care about this stuff too, so i must say im glad to find someone else on the forum who does.

Sort of.

Many resources are finite, and things like recycling are a valuable way of slowing our overall use of them, meaning that supplies will last longer overall.
As for climate change, there's no doubt it's happening, as it has always done, but anthropogenic climate change, I'm not so sure - however there is nowhere near enough evidence on either side to say whether it is real or not, the majority of it is just politics dressed up as science. Regardless of that, cutting down on use of finite resources is just common sense.

Anyway, enough of that, I think.

Guys, I only put that clip of the 'snatcher in at Edinburgh as a neat way of sneaking in the best clag video I've ever seen! That's me leaning out of the fourth quarterlight of the second coach BTW.

Very surprised to hear you say that. Why would you think that nobody else cares about it?

Good luck with that, there's dicibable sod all in the Siemens Mobility Rail other than the odd Software Engineer in Poole that I've come across recently... As for LHCS, well, I'm a fan, so automatically a number of people aren't...

To be a bit more serious, to get a PhD by the time I'm 40. I'm going to have to earn some money before then. Also, to get a book or two published.

I don't believe in having life goals, I have short term life ambitions depending on what the situation is at present.

Absolutely detest the phrase "set your target" or "set your goal", I've it heard so many times at school and work. Its one of those new 'buzzwords' I despise that tend to be used in the world of business by complete ****holes.

My general ambitions, are go to college and then a job which doesn't absolutely bore the pants off me, basically anything that's not in Business and Finance and get a car within the next 10 years.

Sounds like you're limiting yourself because of a silly hang-up about phraseology. Seems a bit churlish, a bit short-sighted. A career can take you so, so far, and you're far too young to make decisions like "I never want to work in business" as if business is a dirty word! Just live life as it comes, don't get too bogged down just because you get a bit annoyed about a bit of business speak.

So your life's ambition is to purchase a vehicle...? Ambitions are not fulfilled in car dealerships. They are achieved through hard work and taking opportunities, inside work and outside of work. See where life takes you fella.
