Ive got my VSE & MMI next week. I'm going for Hastings too so fingers crossed I'll be not be far off joining you at the school in April.
You mention the interview was to the letter of the law, do you mean they didn't deviate too much from the pre-prepared questions?

Excatally this pal. They where very robotic in approach and precise in the way the question was asked. Just make sure fully prepared and you'll be fine. Good luck with the process.

Got my MMI on Thursday. Gone for the Ashford depot. It's says it will be three hours long. Is this usually the case? Seems very long for a single interview.

It's been a little while since I had mine, but I think there was about 20 mins to do the preliminary SJT, then another 20 mins or so to fill in the pre-interview form, and then I think my interview was around 1hr 20 or so, plus there was also some general preamble and post-interview chat. I wager they say 3 hours as a worst case, so you're prepared just in case it takes longer, but it's entirely likely to take much less time.

Potentially right... Like the above says they want you to write examples down etc, full in forms etc. then depends how many mmis they have and his many doing them. Good luck tho pal

Hi CFRAIL, it went better than I thought.
Was really nervous before hand but I really enjoyed it, suppose to be 1hr but we was chatting for 90mins
I was told that other people to interview this week so I should hear back early/mid next week on outcome.

Good news all, passed the DMi, MMI and medical booked for early Feb.
Basically been told over the phone that so long as I say nothing silly in the MMi I’ve passed.
Course date for 27th April here I come.

That best news, congratulations mate! Hopefully I'll be in the same position at some point this year (although a longer wait is expected for my chosen depot).

Somebody previously said to have a little read up at the AWS system on trains and mention that after you talk about TPWS, I def got raised eyebrows and smiley faces when I mentioned it, brownie points go a long way.
Otherwise just be yourself, my background of auto electrician and EV/high voltage vehicle accredited plays to my strengths when asked questions about safety and following rules and regs etc.

I had mine the other day. They informed me I'd passed the MMI within about an hour of it ending.

Try not to worry too much about what specific questions are asked and prepare to much for them, you may not get the same questions. I've just sat and passed my Psych/MMI to Enhanced for Northern which I'm sure will be similar to yours.
You'll do a SJE and select what you think of behaving a certain way in a number of situations, and the questions for your MMI will be selected from a list of possible questions they have on a list, to probe you about the type of person you reveal yourself to be in the SJE.
They're along the lines of application questions, "tell us about a time when...". Before you go in to MMI they'll give you a pre interview form to fill where you can make little notes about your answers, which you'll expand on in the MMI. Just stay calm and friendly, ask for a moment to compose yourself if you need it, hit all the right notes on your attitude to safety and protocols and I'm sure you'll be fine.
I should point out that this was my experience with Northern and other TOC's may vary, but I doubt it will be any different given that they're standardised.

Staff passes cover SE and GTR for duty, residential and leisure travel. Priv rate for leisure travel on all other domestic operators (excluding Caledonian) after six months.

Well I didn't specifically think to myself at each answer to make sure I followed the format, but I've filled in so many applications in the last year I pretty much think in the STAR format now! As long as you talk through your answers with an obvious "this is the situation I'm using for an example, this is what happened, this is what I did and this was the outcome" then you'll pretty much have nailed it. I mean that's pretty much how you'd tell your mate a story. Just keep in mind that you mention the why of your actions, and how your action related to safety etc.
I should remind you that I'm no expert, this was my first attempt, so I don't have a fail to refer back to in terms of anything I did differently this time around. I think they just want to see how you think, are you safety focused, are you conscientious, can you learn, do you make rational decisions in critical situations.
I'm sure you'll do well, and if not, you'll regroup and go again. Best of luck!
