Other than at rush hours, a 1 car dmu would suffice for the Coryton branch. At one time, the service was run by bubble cars (class 121).
Today it's a single 153 (with the accessible lavatory taking up about a quarter of the space and reducing the seating capacity to less than 60).

Not ideal having a 153 arriving at Ninian Park after a match at the Cardiff City Stadium

Hopefully pre/post match services are something that will be significantly improved when the Metro works are completed

People were actively encouraged to use Grangetown station instead although it is further away

If its like Crystal Palace then Home supporters and Away supporters are encouraged to use different stations so probably both stations.

Cardiff Bay update: we have track! No ballast yet, and I couldn’t see if the new turnout has been installed yet. 8797EF56-C4F5-4641-BC7B-2968A6A543E7.jpeg

South Wales, but from the flat Southlands of lincs
My question, I was walking around Pontypridd earlier - I normally walk under the viaducts, but today, I decided to walk through the car park and then over the footbridge to the station, so I saw these structures for the first time (to the north of the station, where the Rhondda line splits from the Merthyr/aberdare lines). Are they purely for carrying wiring from one side of the track to the other, or do they have anything to do with electrification from that point? I have no idea where the electrification is due to start north of the station, which is bad when I live here and use the train to Cardiff and back 3 or 4 times a week,

IIRC the OLE north of the station resumes after both viaducts.
The masts here are mainly for cable carrying, and also switching - I think the Track Sectioning Site (TSS) at Pontypridd is going in the delta between the two branches (after the demolition of the old signalbox).

I understand engineering work is taking place around Treforest this morning, but this image from Traksy taken at 0530 is interesting!

Radyr SCC closed at 0030 this morning, control passing to Taff Wells over the weekend.

There is always a retirement.

Along with Abercynon PSB although I don't know if that closed at exactly the same time. Signal prefixes for control from Taffs Well (or, according to Philips Deaves' website, the "Core Valley Lines IECC" are VA (former Abercynon PSB signals) and VR (former Valleys Radyr PSB signals).

Having spent much time travelling along it under the Token system over the last 13 years I did send NR an email to ask if it might be possible to get hold of one of each type of token for the Porth - Treherbert line but have had no response. It would be nice to have a souvenir so I hope they will reply. Or will I have to pay their "redundant assets" section a large amount of money that will probably be equal to 50% of my monthly income?

The tokens, along with the rest of the 'core valley lines' belong to the Welsh Government.

They may also be offered to museums first, Pembrokeshire museums for instance have some of the redundant tokens, and those things are massive.

Canton Depot has also had its OLE energised.

BAM Nuttall installed the wires, Balfour Beatty did the HV power works.
Now we just need that annoying gap between Canton & the limit of wiring between Ninian Park & Waun-gron Park to be closed...<D

Is it planned to be? (To be honest, I find it hard to remember which bits are being wired and which are not...)

Sadly, it isn't, because it's NR-owned infrastructure and the works only cover the TfW-owned infrastructure.
Hopefully they'll remedy that at some point...

Thanks for the info. I wasn’t aware the depot was an island of TfW ownership. Hopefully logic will prevail at some point, as you say…

Gap extends from Canton Depot/ Ninian Park station beyond the TFW/CVL Route Boundary (RAD 1m 20ch) to RAD 1m 39ch

Sanatorium Road bridge is RAD 1m 24ch

Bit surprised masts didn’t go to the TFW/CVL Route Boundary - circa another 200 metres or so . . .

Could they not just approach Network Rail and basically say we pay for it you make it happen?

Yes, they could. But they won't as a matter of principle. Rail infrastructure is not devolved (apart from the core valley lines which were given to the Welsh Government).

The Welsh Government have paid them directly for some infrasturcture improvements in the past (from memory, linespeed work around Wrexham, and refurbishing the bay platforms at Wrexham General). But principles can change over time, of course, and paying for piecemeal NR electrification around Cardiff detracts from the argument of getting NR/Westminster to fund electrifying the SWML as a whole.
