What exactly were brake vans?
I remember seeing them in Hornby catalogues. And coaches called things like ‘1st brake open’. Did they actually help the train brake?
AIUI, slip coaches (post Armagh) were normally controlled by judicious use of the vacuum brake. The problems arose if the slip guard was a bit eager and stopped short. Presumably slip coaches were fitted with handbrakes also, but for parking purposes rather than train control.And, on a tangent, slip coaches.
