Skip bashing: is it wrong?

I've always thought that skip bashing is wrong, and that skip bashers are dirty, degenerate people. However, this summer I took one up to Fort William, and also from Wrexham to Marylebone and back, and throughly enjoyed it. I'd like to think I was enjoying it just because it was loco haulage, but I think I may actually to my horror have enjoyed the skips a bit as well. Does this make me a bad person? Is it the thin end of a wedge that might end up with me bashing modern DMUs?

Indeed. I'm planning to take in the Fife one and the Inverness > London sleeper in the next month or so, so I will be drawn yet further into the murky world of 67 appreciation!

I've had 29 of the 30 Class 67s and I know a lot of people who have cleared them. Quite a few people are happy to do them and to be honest it's nice to do a loco on a normal train (rather than a railtour or gala) now and then.

What puzzles me more is you doing them considering the stock they haul!

I know, it's great to get loco haulage IRL.

Hehehe! I've never had any objection to aircons on service trains, because there are hardly any bashers on board and therefore plenty of opening windows to go round. On railtours now, that's a different matter.....

I have thought the very same thing after doing quite a number of trips from Cardiff to Newport / Patchway / Bristol TM behind the 67's. It is a bit of a case of beggars can't be choosers. It would be fantastic to be hauled by the older british built locos. The reason I went on it is so that at least you are being hauled by a loco, the MK2 coaches are older styled and make you think you're on a late 80's - 90's service plus the "you can look out the window" bonus

These days there isn't much choice! I don't rate skips but i'll "bash" them simply because its loco hauled!

Ukrailtours 'Cumbrian Fellsman' tour last Saturday was hauled by 'The Queens Messenger' - one of the skips allocated to the Royal Train. Somewhat appropriately it hauled the 'Royal Scot' set!

Still, some punters would have preferred a 50, 52 or 55, but for 'normals' it's the journey that counts, not the traction

Only two of the 10 Royal Scot coaches are standard class ones so it's clear that Ukrailtours have a preference for 'normals' who want to travel in more comfort. Sorry

Nothing wrong with 67s. I would never class myself as a basher of any loco more than another, but as far as loco hauled services, other than railtours, there are a few 67s around. I like the sound of the 67s pulling away from remote stations on a cold winters morning travelling northbound on the Caledonain sleeper, head out the window, tears streaming from my eyes (from the cold, not the emotion of being hauled by a 67!), Roll on December!

I suspect the first class coaches would be just as comfortable if pulled by a tractor tho....

Indeed and I am doing as often as I can. It reminds me of the hilarious video where Zontar admits to 33 bashing, and how he has to keep it a secret from all his friends in the deltic community. Annoyingly all the Zontar videos seem to have been taken down off YouTube tho :-x

I'm a fully signed up member to the club and know of loads of others that are too.

I've only cleared 6 or 7 of them but know people who have cleared 29 of them.

Why do you need to ask anyway? If you like them, do them. If not, don't. Don't feel you should either because it's LHCS - If you find it boring, why bother?

I shall be out on them tomorrow and every day this week (as per usual).

Prefered 57s, because of the GM645 power unit.

I've always despised our 201s which are powered with GM710s and are pure muck which is why I originally never liked 67s, but must say that I was pleasently surprised at how much louder they are than 201s.

I grew to like them over the last year on the Tauntons, where they proved to be louder, and more reliable than the 57s.

67016 seems to be one of the more "rateable" ones, though personally I am sick of the sight of it.

Get down to the South West. 67 territory there - 016/019/027/028.

Agreed - ugly creatures - as are all Classes 1-99

Sorry guys I only do 'modern' (ie 1980s onwards, and I dont know too much except for the actual trains - not engines etc )

Each to their own, one of the best things about the railways there's pretty much something in it for everyone!
