Likewise OT, that didn't come across to me as a rant but a very informative post.

I have to say I wasn't aware that banner repeaters were there to sight whether a signal was off, although thinking about it now, it does kind of make sense. With this new way of thinking, is that why we are now getting new types of banners with coloured backgrounds?

And they are

from my point of view. But yes, point conceded about the cost of resignalling these days.

It would appear ERTMS Level 2 can't come soon enough

Interesting as the PRIs I have seen don't have any banners near them, unless of course the PRI can count as a single banner. The PRIs at Birmingham International certainly don't have a banner signal near them, and I don't recall the one prior to Rugby on the down having one either.

They don't have banners, but they are essentially banners for junction signals. I really like them, but I would imagine they are quite expensive. From a purely operational point of view they do make for a better railway though.

The PRI is simply that, a preliminary route indicator. Its purpose is to allow the Driver to stop the train before the controlling junction signal to prevent a wrong routing.

Seems to me we're off down an interetsing but irrelevant byeway.

I have a memory that the signal on the end of the Up Goods at Nuneaton had a six-way indicator.

P1 Up Slow via Leicester
P2 Up Leicester
P3 Up Slow
P4 Up Fast
P5 Up Coventry
p6 Down Coventry

If it aids the memory I've just checked the two sketches I've got - the initial resignalling in 1963 has NN39 with three JI's (when it was the Up Goods No. 1) and the next one I have from Furlong House days shows NN39 with four JI's, and six possible routes.

I can think of 2 signals with 4 RIs around here (T99 (down slow) and T124 (up fast), both approaching East Croydon), but nothing with any more RIs than that.
